My son Noah is always trying to find a shortcut for his homework. He likes to avoid the “hard” stuff (although when it comes to “hard” physical activity, he’s all over it).
And he isn’t alone (is he?).
We humans like to avoid “hard”. We don’t bother going after goals that might take too long to see results. We avoid work that requires a lot of time and energy. We make excuses why not to do the uncomfortable things.
Because you’re human (and it’s instinctive), you likely do the same things.
Even though these "hard" things are often the most worthwhile.
They teach. They build resilience. They create the best results.
[And how much do you enjoy “success” that’s easy or feels handed to you?]
The thing I constantly remind myself (and am trying to teach Noah) is this:
Hard is inevitable. But you can choose your hard.
You know what's the hardest thing of all, Friend?
Realizing you've wasted years avoiding discomfort, only to end up stuck in a place you never wanted to be.
The key to real success isn’t avoiding the hard things. It’s choosing them with intention.
XO, Heather
P.S. You know what’s hard for most private practice lawyers? Networking with friends for business. Even though it need not feel - or be - hard at all.
That’s why I’m talking about how to network with friends for business (without feeling awkward or pushy) in today’s Life & Law Podcast. Listen >>>here. |
