CODED BIAS

Coded Bias

“Thought-provoking…Coded Bias serves as both a wake-up call (to invasive practices the public doesn’t yet realize are being implemented) and a call to action."

Coded Bias reveals the groundbreaking research of MIT researcher Joy Buolamwini, proving that facial recognition algorithms have the power to disseminate racial bias at scale. In June 2020, IBM, Amazon, and Microsoft said they would pause the sale of facial recognition to police.

In a pivotal moment for racial equality, and a decisive moment for how big tech will yield power, Coded Bias is a trailblazing film for public understanding and engagement with the algorithms that impact us all.

“A lively and moving documentary about the first major American hospital center for transgender surgery shows us what the future will look like."

Born to Be follows the work of Dr. Jess Ting (he/him) at the groundbreaking Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery. There, for the first time ever in New York City, transgender and gender non-conforming people have access to quality transition-related care.

With extraordinary access, this remarkable documentary offers an intimate look at how one doctor’s work impacts the lives of his patients as well as how his journey from renowned plastic surgeon to pioneering gender-affirming specialist has led to his own transformation.

Severin Films chief David Gregory and House Of Psychotic Women author Kier-La Janisse query a global roster of more than 60 horror writers, directors and scholars in a candid discussion of the very best portmanteaus in fright film/TV history.

VIRTUAL CINEMA
THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

The Twentieth Century

“Even without prior knowledge of our neighbor to the north, it can be enjoyed for its combination of supreme creativity, jaw-dropping audacity and amusing tongue-in-cheek dialogue.”

Toronto, 1899. Aspiring young politician Mackenzie King dreams of becoming the Prime Minister of Canada.

But his romantic vacillation between a British soldier and a French nurse, exacerbated by a fetishistic obsession, may well bring about his downfall. In his quest for power, King must gratify the expectations of his imperious Mother, the hawkish fantasies of a war-mongering Governor-General, and the utopian idealism of a Québécois mystic before facing one, final test of leadership. Culminating in an epic battle between good and evil, King learns that disappointment may be the defining characteristic of the twentieth century!

Director: Matthew Rankin
Writer: Matthew Rankin
Stars: Dan Beirne, Sarianne Cormier, Catherine St-Laurent

We're approaching the all-important "lame duck" session of Congress, when another COVID relief package is sure to be on the docket. The movie theater operators of America are desperate for help from Congress. Without such help, 70% of the theaters in the country could file for bankruptcy or close permanently by the end of the year. More than 70,000 jobs could be lost permanently.

Senators Schumer, Cardin and Shaheen have included relief for movie theaters as part of the Save Our Stages initiative, and SOS is now included in their COVID relief bill. We seek a bipartisan solution for pandemic relief now that would include these provisions to preserve moviegoing in America.

WHAT WE'RE ASKING
ADVOCATE FOR A BIPARTISAN SOLUTION THAT SUPPORTS THE EXPANDED SAVE OUR STAGES ACT:

  • Support an expanded SOS Act that provides grants to performance venues, live theater, and movie theaters, calculated at up to 45% of gross 2019 revenues or $12 million per company, whichever is less. Also allows a supplemental grant for businesses that have lost over 80% in revenue.

  • Movie theaters and live venues are among the hardest-hit industries that will be the slowest to recover from the pandemic.

  • SOS is the only proposal that offers the right amount of FLEXIBLE funding that will be the bridge that keeps the theaters from going dark forever. Across the country this legislation would save over 3,500 theaters.
