Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema 🎥 Updates for July 8, 2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

A special thanks to all the folks who have taken part in the many Q & A sessions we've been offering as part of our Virtual Cinema programming. There's another exciting one coming up TOMORROW night. On July 9, all ticket-buyers of John Lewis: Good Trouble are welcome to stream a live panel discussion presented by the Freedom Rides Museum of Montgomery, Alabama, featuring Freedom Riders Dr. Bernard Lafayette and Dr. Rip Patton in conversation with director Dawn Porter. The live panel begins at 8 pm EST.

As we head into another summer weekend, we're offering 3 new narrative films to our virtual cinema titles. A rare week with no documentaries! Luckily there are plenty of those continuing for another week.

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

RECOMMENDED VIEWING

The art of film provides a unique space where we can grapple with and illuminate contemporary issues. As our nation continues to come to terms with its long history of racial violence and inequities, we encourage all Cinemapolitans to watch, read, and listen to black voices; act in support of anti-racist causes; and donate to organizations that are providing services and aid to movements of social protest for racial justice.

  • Fans of Hamilton can catch star Daveed Diggs in Blindspotting, an under-appreciated 2018 film from director Carlos López Estrada, now available on HBO. It follows an Oakland-based mover who, while attempting to get through his final days of probation without any trouble, witnesses a White police officer kill a Black man.

  • As an alternative to Hamilton, revisit Spike Lee’s modern-day recasting of Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata,” the provocative musical Chi-Raq. It's now streaming on Amazon Prime.
