Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema đŸŽ„ Updates for August 5, 2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

We’re eagerly awaiting news from the Governor’s office about when and how cinemas can re-open in New York State. Our friends at the National Association of Theater Owners tell us that there are proposed guidelines waiting on Andrew Cuomo’s desk, so we’re hopeful that word from Albany will be coming soon.

In the meantime, THANK YOU to all who have joined in on the Virtual Cinema experiment with us during the closure. Each time you purchase a virtual ticket and view one of our brand new independent features from home, you’re directly supporting the efforts to keep the cinema alive and our beloved “Mop Squad” of employees paid. We’ll also gladly accept your tax-deductible donations to help fund the many changes underway to make the movie-going experience a safe one in the post-COVID world.

This week, we add FOUR new titles to the mix - two rock docs, an adaptation of a beloved Norwegian novel, and an unearthed glimpse into the life of an American literary great.

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

CREEM: AMERICA'S ONLY ROCK 'N' ROLLS MAGAZINE

Creem

“A brief, careening survey through the publication’s two-decade life and times, filled with colorful personalities and commentary. Vintage rock fans will be in (cough) high heaven.”

Capturing the messy upheaval of the ’70s just as rock was re-inventing itself, the film explores CREEM Magazine’s humble beginnings in post-riot Detroit, follows its upward trajectory from underground paper to national powerhouse, then bears witness to its imminent demise following the tragic and untimely deaths of its visionary publisher, Barry Kramer, and its most famous alum and genius clown prince, Lester Bangs, a year later.

Fifty years after publishing its first issue, “America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine” remains a seditious spirit in music and culture.

YOU NEVER HAD IT: AN EVENING WITH CHARLES BUKOWSKI

You Never Had It

“You Never Had It succeeds first and foremost as a time capsule which captures an iconic American author in his natural state and habitat. This is must see footage for any Bukowski enthusiast.”

Producer and journalist Silvia Bizio introduces an evening with writer Charles Bukowski by recounting her time with the author and the discovery of an extraordinary time capsule that lead to the documentary’s creation. This short documentary is based on a video interview conducted by Bizio in January of 1981 with Bukowski at his home in San Pedro, California. It was a long night of smoking cigarettes and drinking wine with Bukowski and his soon to be wife, Linda Lee Beighle, talking about all kinds of subjects, from writers to sex, love and humanity.

The interview was shot on Umatic tapes which have been digitized and edited along with new shots in Super8 of scenes of Los Angeles today and poems read by the same Bukowski.

#SaveYourCinema

As our members and supporters, we want to let you know about the urgent state of movie theaters as we go through these uncertain times.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put movie theaters like ours at risk of going dark for good. From small independent art houses like Cinemapolis to nationwide exhibitors, movie theaters employ over 150,000 people and have formed a cornerstone of the American experience for generations. Without swift action from Congress, our theaters could close forever—depriving audiences of the magic of movies for years to come.

The negotiations for the next relief bill are still underway. Together, we can urge Congress to keep movie theaters alive until they can fully reopen. Visit saveyourcinema.com to tell your legislators that you demand action to save local movie theaters now.
