Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema & Home 🎥 Viewing Options - 4/15/2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

Thanks to everyone who tried out our many virtual cinema offerings over the past several days. It's not the same as welcoming you into the cinema in person, but it'll have to do until we make it through this current crisis.

Some good news - all four of our initial virtual offerings are being held over for ONE MORE week. If you have a chance, please check them out.

In the meantime, brace yourselves for five new titles available exclusively for in-home viewing starting this Friday, April 17: And Then We Danced, The Booksellers, Extra Ordinary, The Whistlers, and a very special "Pay What You Can" offering of The Best of the Cat Video Fest!

A reminder that we moved quickly and thoughtfully to launch these virtual cinema offerings, but they're new. Please be patient if there are some initial technical issues - know that we'll respond promptly.

A full listing of all these new offerings can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

VIRTUAL CINEMA STARTING 4/17

And Then We Danced
The Booksellers
Extra Ordinary
The Whistlers

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
AND THEN WE DANCED

And Then We Danced

"It’s one of the year’s best gay films."

Presented in collaboration with the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, And Then We Danced was originally slated to screen at Cornell Cinema this semester. Our friends on East Hill have closed down as well, but they're keeping fans busy with some great suggestions here.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
THE BOOKSELLERS

The Booksellers

"Lovely and wistful. 'The Booksellers' is a documentary for anyone who can still look at a book and see a dream, a magic teleportation device, an object that contains the world."

We're excited to present The Booksellers in collaboration with one of our fellow "non-essential" businesses - Buffalo Street Books. Proceeds from all rentals of the film will be split evenly between your favorite community cinema and community bookstore.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
EXTRA ORDINARY

Extra Ordinary

"“It might just be the best supernatural comedy since What We Do in the Shadows.”

We could all use the levity provided by Extra Ordinary, an Irish import that we had originally planned to present on our screens this month. Our friends at Ithaca Fantastik had even planned another Fantastik Friday event for opening night! Instead, you should find a FaceTime, Hangout, or Zoom buddy to share some laughs with while co-watching this one.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:

THE WHISTLERS

"This comedic thriller is witty and diverting without selling out on the Romanian reputation of thoughtful, challenging work."

Corneliu Porumboiu breaks from the norm of New Romanian Cinema with the dryly humorous heist picture, The Whistlers. Another title that was originally set to play during the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, this one was nominated for the Palme d'Or at last year's Cannes Film Festival.

VIRTUAL CINEMA: BEST OF CAT VIDEO FEST: CREATURE COMFORTS EDITION

Best of Cat Video Fest

LIMITED ENGAGEMENT
"PAY WHAT YOU CAN"

You asked for it, so we delivered! For the first time ever, CatVideoFest is available to screen virtually outside of theaters! Long time CatVideoFest curator extraordinaire, Will Braden, has crafted a 40-min “treat” of a reel that includes the very best videos from CVF’s illustrious history.

A big thanks to our friends at Oscilloscope Laboratories for making this virtual cinema feature available as a “Pay What You Can” presentation. They’re taking a very small processing fee and passing on your generosity to help keep Cinemapolis operating during the current crisis. The minimum purchase price is only $.99, but please feel free to Pay What You Can and support your favorite community cinema!

CONTINUING ON VIRTUAL CINEMA

MOVIE THEATERS IN THE NEWS

The doors may be closed, but there's been plenty to talk about with the press:

  • SpectrumNews gave local cable subscribers a look at our virtual cinema project.

  • Owen Gleiberman of Variety shared this great column on "why nothing can replace" movie theaters.

  • We continue to offer our "Independent Look at the Movies" every Thursday on Lite 97.3's Mornings with Dave & Jen

  • In a piece for the Associated Press, Jake Cole says "The absence of movie theaters isn't proving a streaming future. It's proving how much we need cinemas."

COMING SOON TO VIRTUAL CINEMA
