Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Updates & Home 🎥 Viewing Options - 4/1/2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

It's no foolin' - we really miss watching movies with you. We're kicking off April with a closed cinema, but I'm constantly encouraged by the articles and emails flooding my inbox that make me hopeful for the day when the projectors fire up again.

I especially liked this excerpt from "When Cinemas Reopen, Visit Them:"

  • "But cinemas were born for a reason, and they grew into the cultural institutions they became precisely because the art form demanded it. Some things call for intimacy, and some call for communal, shared experience. The movies, I would argue, fall into the latter category far more often than not. And when we can go see them again, I hope we will."

In the meantime, you're hungry for great content to stream at home. We're here to help with another week of recommendations. Hope you enjoy them!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

The award-winning French drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire was JUST on our screens a few weeks ago. But the film's distributor, NEON, has decided to make Céline Sciamma's gorgeous period piece available exclusively for streaming on Hulu.

If you missed this one on the big screen, be sure to catch it at home ASAP!

IF YOU LIKED JOJO RABBIT:

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE

Before Jojo, writer/director Taika Waititi told the tale of another precocious tween in Hunt for the Wilderpeople. This rollicking chase through the wilds of New Zealand played at Cinemapolis in the summer of 2016, and it received rave reviews from the likes of Manohla Dargis: "Charming and funny, it is a drama masquerading as a comedy about an unloved boy whom nobody wants until someone says, 'Yes, I'll love him.'"

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is now available to stream via Hulu.

IF YOU LIKED THE OSCAR SHORTS:

2020 SXSW SHORTS

SXSW

The 2020 South by Southwest festival was one of the first large gatherings in the U.S. to be cancelled in response to the current health crisis. This enormous event includes film, comedy, television, music, and gaming.

As a way to support the many artists who lost an opportunity share their work with the world, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope Laboratories have created a digital home for this year's slate of short films.

Visit their special portal for a chance to see more than 50 cutting edge, independent shorts.

IF YOU LIKED THE LIGHTHOUSE:

THE VVITCH

THE VVITCH

Robert Eggers's Oscar nominated sophomore effort The Lighthouse was a hit at Cinemapolis last fall.

His first film, The VVitch, is billed as a "New England Folktale" and features a similarly stripped-down period setting.

Eric Kohn of IndieWire says it "manages a tricky balance: On the one hand an elegant period piece about the dissolution of a New England family circa 1630, it’s also a genuinely unsettling horror movie about possession."

The VVitch is now available for streaming via Netflix.

IF YOU MISS NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE:

NT AT HOME

NT At Home

Like all performing arts centers, The National Theatre was forced to temporarily close its doors. Our friends at National Theatre Live have announced a special opportunity to get your West End fix.  TOMORROW, they will launch National Theatre At Home.

As part of this, the National Theatre will be releasing one back catalogue National Theatre Live title per week across April and May on the National Theatre YouTube channel. These titles will be free to stream, and be available for one week only.

The first four titles are One Man, Two Guvnors, Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, and Twelfth Night.
