Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Plenty to celebrate in Downtown Ithaca this weekend. In addition to the rebuilt Commons dedication, we also have two great new films opening:
  • With Diary of a Teenage Girl, first time writer/director Marielle Heller has adapted Phoebe Gloeckner's semi-autobiographical graphic novel into what the Guardian calls a "scaldingly honest coming of age" comedy-drama.Tracking the exploits of budding artist Minnie (Bel Powley) through the post-hippie haze of 70s San Francisco, the film captures the look and feel of both that period and the rites of passage into adulthood suggested by the title. Add a proto-punk soundtrack and the integration of hand-drawn cartoons, and you get a film that is "morally complex and sometimes uncomfortably close to the bone, but also lushly bawdy and funny."

  • Also this weekend comes Phoenix, the latest team up of German auteur Christian Petzold and star Nina Hoss (Barbara).  This Hitchcockian thriller follows Nelly, a disfigured concentration-camp survivor, as she returns to post-war Germany in search of her husband and a new life. A layered story of mistaken (or not-so-mistaken) identity flows into what the Hollywood Reporter calls  "both a powerful allegory for post-war regeneration and a rich Hitchcockian tale of mistaken identity, [proving] that German filmmaker Christian Petzold and his favorite star, Nina Hoss, are clearly one of the best director-actor duos working in movies today." Don't miss this LIMITED ENGAGEMENT
Also this weekend, comes Tompkins County's first community-wide day of giving, Giving Is Gorges.  On Friday, Aug. 28, this 24-hour online giving challenge is a chance to celebrate our local nonprofits and affirm our culture of giving throughout Tompkins County. The event will begin at 12:00 a.m. on August 28 and continue until midnight that night and will work to raise awareness and funds for the local nonprofits in our community. On Friday, please consider making a gift at our Giving is Gorges profile page  or feel free to support to our mission anytime by visiting our Donor Page at Cinemapolis.org.
While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in to see Amy and The Look of Silence soon. They both leave THIS Thursday (August 27).
 See you at the movies!
