Greetings Cinemapolitans!

The schedule gets streamlined this weekend as we say goodbye to five films and welcome three new ones:

  • The triumphs and challenges of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson take center stage in the new film, Love & Mercy. Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Ruby Sparks) and John Cusack (Maps to the Stars, The Butler) each play the troubled rocker in alternating stages of his life. The result is what Variety's Andrew Barker calls "A wonderfully innervating cure for the common musical biopic [that] vibrantly illuminates two major breakthroughs — one artistic, one personal — in the life of the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson."

  • Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Slow West is the feature debut from writer/director (and "The Beta Band" founder) John Maclean. Michael Fassbender (Frank, 12 Years A Slave) takes another indie turn in this ensemble Western that Rodrigo Perez of IndieWire calls "a dark, but spirited fable about the pitilessness of the West, the meaning of home on the range and the worthwhile qualities of wicked, seemingly irredeemable men."

  • And lastly comes a special limited engagement of Alex Garland's A.I. masterpiece, Ex Machina. Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year, Inside Llewyn Davis) and Domhnall Gleason (Frank, Calvary) star opposite Alicia Vikander (A Royal Affair) as two tech geniuses and an artificial intelligence experiment, respectively. A tightly written three-hander,  Robbie Collin of The Telegraph calls Ex Machina "bewitchingly smart science fiction of a type that's all too rare...Its intelligence is anything but artificial." It's here for one week only, so don't miss it!
While you plan your next week at the movies, be sure to catch Iris, Lambert & Stamp, Salt of the Earth, Welcome to Me, and Woman in Gold soon, they all leave this Thursday (June 4).

 See you at the movies!
