Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Lots of activity as we gear up for the first official days of summer, with special events galore and THREE new openers this Friday:
  • After decades of supporting and character roles, Blythe Danner finally gets the lead in the middle-aged rom-com, I'll See You In My Dreams. Brooklyn-based filmmaker Brett Haley directs a stellar ensemble in this sweet romance that has something for everyone. According to Stephanie Zachareck of the Village Voice, "This is a movie for people who love actors and what they can do, and who warm to the idea of seeing underexplored corners of real life portrayed onscreen. That's a long way of saying you don't have to be a middle-aged woman to love it."

  • When Marnie Was There could very well be the last feature from Studio Ghibli, the famous Japanese animation studio co-founded by now-retired master Hayao Miyazaki. But that's not the only reason to see it. Adapted from a British ghost story, the film eschews magical trains and walking houses for a simpler story of female friendship. Peter Debruge of Variety says, "Yonebayashi's open-hearted tale, more than any other Ghibli offering, could conceivably have worked just as well in live-action, and yet the tender story gains so much from the studio's delicate, hand-crafted approach."

Ghibli purists take note: The 9:20 screenings of When Marnie Was There will feature subtitles. All other screenings will be dubbed in English.

  • Finally, don't miss the very limited engagement of Aloft, the English language debut from Peruvian auteur Claudia Llosa. Jennifer Connelly and Cillian Murphy star as an estranged mother and son in parallel storylines than collide when a journalist (Melanie Laurent) reunites them 20 years after his abandonment. Nominated for the Golden Bear at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival, Aloft is here for ONE WEEK ONLY.
The weekend kicks off with another installment of the Fantastic Film Friday series. On Friday at 9:30 comes How To Save Us, the latest from indie horror master Jason Trost, who directed, co-wrote, and stars as Brian Everett, a man who's forced to traverse across enemy lines to save his brother from an army of ghosts.

Hugues from the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival will be on hand to lead a skype session with Trost himself before the show!

On Sunday at 2 pm, the Family Classics Picture Show continues to re-introduce the Golden Age of Hollywood to parents and kids with a screening of Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.

To get families excited about the magic of the movies, the film will feature an introduction by actor, magician, and movie buff David Moreland and will include a custom enrichment guide to help continue the conversation after the credits roll.

Looking ahead to next Thursday, National Theatre Live follows up with a special encore of the original London production of the performance that just won Helen Mirren a Tony. In The Audience, Mirren reprises her Academy Award-winning role as Queen Elizabeth II. These encore screenings of the original West End production were captured live in London in 2013, and feature an exclusive new Q&A with key members of the cast and creative team. There are two chances to see the production the NY Times calls "smashing"--on Thursday, June 25th at 6:30 and again on Saturday, June 27th at 1:30 pm.
While you plan your next week at the movies, be sure to catch The 100 Year Old Man and Saint Laurent soon, they leave this Thursday (June 18).

 See you at the movies!
