Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
We're starting a new month with THREE very limited engagements added to our already popular slate. See these films while you can!
  • Stanley Tucci returns to a post behind the camera to direct his fifth feature, Final Portrait.  Geoffrey Rush stars as Swiss sculptor and painter, Alberto Giacometti in this mini-biopic that focuses on the weeks in 1964 that the artist spent creating a portrait of art critic James Lord. Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name) plays Lord in the film Owen Gleiberman of Variety calls "a captivating portrait of an artist who’s at once elated, haunted, and utterly possessed."

  • With Itzhak, documentarian Alison Chernick provides a marvelous glimpse into the life, work, and marriage of famed violinist Itzhak Perlman. According to Variety's Dennis Harvey, "Good music and good company make “Itzhak” a pleasure."

  • Writer-Director Aaron Katz (Land Ho!) takes a darker turn for his latest, Gemini. A send-up of Hollywood's celebrity culture, the film unfolds as both a murder mystery and a relationship drama between a rising starlet (Zoë Kravitz, Dope) and her assistant (Lola Kirke, Mistress America). Eric Kohn of Indiewire says it "resists easy categorization, evades tidy plot points...But it’s an absorbing world defined by open-ended possibilities, a kind of comedic psychological thriller in which the thrills exist in air quotes."

In addition to these new titles, we have several special events on the way, including one TODAY:
LAW DAY 2018 CELEBRATION
Tuesday, May 1

Cinemapolis will be celebrating juris prudence this May 1st. To commemorate Law Day 2018, we’re hosting a pair of special screenings that showcase lawyering at its best. The program kicks off at 4:30 pm with the academy award winning 1962 classic, To Kill A Mockingbird. Then, at 7:30 pm, Chadwick Boseman stars in Marshall, the 2017 portrait of Thurgood Marshall, the crusading lawyer who would become the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Law Day at Cinemapolis is made possible by sponsorship support from Cornell Law School and the Tompkins County Bar Association.
Wed, May 2 at 7 pm

The annual Spring Writes Literary Festival touches down at Cinemapolis on Sunday for this special ONE DAY ONLY screening of Doug Nichol's documentary, California Typewriter.  Framed around the titular repair shop in Berkeley, the film takes a deeper look into the connections between the typewriter and the artists who use it. Gary Goldstein of the LA Times calls it "a rich, thoughtful, meticulously crafted tapestry about the evolution of the beloved writing machine for purists, history buffs, collectors and others fighting to preserve or re-embrace analog life."
