Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
We're packing eight titles onto our five screens, with three new openers arriving on Friday:
  • Madeleine Olnek challenges our notions of a famed poet in the historical comedy, Wild Nights with Emily. Molly Shannon stars as Emily Dickinson in a feminist portrait that eschews the usual depictions of a reclusive artist in favor of a lively poet who isn't afraid of publication and who engages in a life-long affair with her brother's wife. Jude Dry of IndieWire says, "to say that they just don’t make movies like this anymore would be grossly inaccurate: It’s hard to imagine anyone making this movie other than Olnek."

  • The Lord of the Rings scribe gets the biopic treatment in Tolkien. Nicholas Hoult stars as the young novelist in a film that tracks the childhood challenges and wartime traumas that would help inspire the timeless tales of Middle Earth.  Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter calls it "a fastidious, keen-minded look at the tumultuous youth of the author."

  • Oscar Winner László Nemes (Son of Saul) returns with another acclaimed period piece - Sunset. Set in Budapest just before World War I, it follows Írisz, an orphan who returns home to find her family business in the hands of a stranger. Nemes employs long close-ups similar to his last outing, and Michael Nordine of IndieWire says "there’s sadness and beauty in every frame."
On top of the new titles, we have a bevy of special event screenings coming up, including three this weekend:

Our friends from Ithaca Fantastik are back with another installment of their Fantastik Friday series.

Writer/director Josh Lobo takes us on a descent into madness with I Trapped the Devil. It follows a family reunited for the holidays just as one of two brothers reveals that he's captured the titular demon and has him stored away in his basement.

It's a paranoid thriller that plays ONE NIGHT ONLY - Friday, May 10 at 9:30 pm!
featuring Q & A w/ director Shai Ben-Dor

Ithaca College alumnus Shai Ben-Dor comes back to town for the local premiere of his documentary The Long Trail Out.  The film tells the story of 70 year old, lifelong youth worker and mountaineer, Tim Buchanan, as he chronicles his life as a closeted gay man. It takes place on the Presidential Travers, a 23 mile hike known for deadly weather—a humbling environment that doesn’t care who you are, and Tim’s favorite place to be.

Ben-Dor will be on hand following the screening for a Q & A.

NewsTalk WHCU is partnering with Cinemapolis to present the Legends and Legacies Film Series. It continues Sunday, May 12th at 2 pm with the Academy Award-winning classic, South Pacific.

Adapted from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical, this hit film centers on a young American nurse stationed on a South Pacific Island, who falls in love with a middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner and his children. A secondary romance, between a U.S. lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman, also pops up in the script.

Prior to the screening, Rod Howe from the Tompkins County Center for History & Culture and Diana Riesman of the Wharton Studio Museum will lead an introductory presentation.

While you’re planning your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch Family and Under the Silver Lake. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, May 9th!

 See you at the movies!
