Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Another busy weekend is coming up with THREE new films opening on Friday:

  • Juliette Binoche heads up a trio of female leads in the latest from writer/director Olivier Assayas (Summer Hours). Weaving play-within-a-movie and movie-within-a-movie storylines into an homage to art of acting, The Clouds of Sils Maria received a Palme d'Or nomination at last year's Cannes Film Festival and won co-star Kristen Stewart a best supporting actress trophy at this year's César awards in France. Peter Debruge of Variety calls it, "a multi-layered, femme-driven meta-fiction that pushes all involved — including next-gen starlets Kristen Stewart and Chloe Grace Moretz — to new heights."

  • Some last minute schedule changes brings Al Pacino's latest film to our screens for a special ONE-WEEK ENGAGEMENT. With Danny Collins, writer/director Dan Fogelman also takes on the fleeting nature of stardom, this time from the musician's perspective. The cast is star-studded—including Annette Bening, Bobby Canavale, Christopher Plummer, and Jennifer Garner—but the film is ultimately a character study for Pacino, and, according to Amy Nicholson of the Village Voice, "he and Fogelman string together dozens of small, perfect moments." Catch those moments while you can. Danny Collins is here for just one week.

  • Rounding out the trio of openers is a fascinating documentary that delves in the world of haute couture. Dior and I is a journey behind the scenes at the famous Christian Dior fashion house, following both the debut of creative director Raf Simons as well as providing a glimpse into the storied past of the French institution, including the many "small hands" that turn wild concepts into runway realities. Stephanie Zacharek of the Village Voice says "Dior and I is a great fashion movie, but it's also a superb picture about the art of management, applicable to any field."
On Saturday, in addition to the matinee screening of the National Theatre Live production of A View from the Bridge, we'll also be welcoming two events that are part of the annual Spring Writes Literary Festival - a performance from the Senior Theatre Troupe of Lifelong at noon and a special multi-media performance piece - Signals with Mary Lorson at 5pm. Find more info at SpringWrites.org.
Looking ahead to next Tuesday, we'll feature a one-night event for the Clay School,  the brain child of local potter Julia E. Dean, now under construction in the South Hill Business Campus.

The Clay School has been raising community support to fund the purchase of new studio equipment, including 11 wheels, 3 kilns, tools, furniture, etc. On TUESDAY, MAY 5th at 7 PM, Join the staff for a screening of the 1990 film, Ghost--reminding us to keep the craft timeless AND sexy!

With three new films coming our way, we have to say goodbye to Kumiko, Merchants of Doubt, and True Story. They all leave on Thursday, so catch them while you can...
See you at the movies!
