Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
March is almost over, but we're going to squeeze in some new films before it's done, with TWO new openers coming on Friday:
  • Writer-director Armando Iannuci (In The Loop, HBO's Veep) hones his darkly comic sensibilities in on the Kremlin for The Death of Stalin. This satire of politics both historic and contemporary collects a remarkable cast of characters, all struggling the fill or escape the vacuum of power created in the aftermath of the titular dictator's death. The star studded cast includes Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin, Jason Isaacs, and Jeffrey Tambor, among many, many others.  Manohla Dargis of the NY Times names it a Critic's Pick, calling it "by turns entertaining and unsettling, with laughs that morph into gasps and uneasy gasps that erupt into queasy, choking laughs."

  • Another NY Times Critic's Pick arrives in the form of Flower, the sophomore effort from director Max Winkler. It's a star turn for Zoey Deutch, who plays Erica, an off-the-rails, amoral teen who's life is turned even further upside down when her mother's boyfriend and his son move in. With great supporting turns from veteran comedians Kathryn Hahn, Adam Scott, and Tim Heidecker, the film dips its toes into the darker side of things, as well.  Jeannette Catsoulis of the NY Times says director Winkler, "swerves from dark coming-of-age comedy to outright horror, refusing to punish Erica for behavior that grows ever more appalling."

We also have some special events not to miss, including one on THIS WEDNESDAY:

Ithaca’s Olive Branch Film Series is once again programming select screenings at Cinemapolis. The group brings cinema by, from and about Palestine to the Ithaca community to promote exploration and discussion of the complexities of Palestinian life, at home and in exile.

The Spring 2018 series continues Wednesday, March 28th with a 7 pm screening of Looted & Hidden – the Palestinian Archives in Israel, a newly released documentary produced by Dr. Rona Sela, an Israeli researcher of visual history and a lecturer at Tel Aviv University. The film will be preceded by The Parrot, a 2016 short directed by Jordanians Darin J. Sallam and Amjad Al Rasheed. The screening will be followed by a facilitated conversation led by representatives of the group.

We're getting a jump on April Fool’s Day this year with a pre-holiday film fest. The 2nd Annual Fool’s Day Flicks Marathon is a day-long event featuring films of and about some of our favorite comedians.

The program kicks off on Saturday, March 31st at 2pm with screenings of three new films: Wait for Your Laugh, I Need You To Kill, and Gilbert
Each screening will feature special intro interviews with filmmakers and experts, including one with Gilbert Gottfried himself! And after the film screenings, Groundhog Comedy will be hosting a LIVE stand-up comedy show at Wine & Design on Cayuga Street. Get your Marathoner Tag and see all four shows for just $25!

The Fool’s Day Flicks Marathon at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor C.S.P. Management.

While you're planning your next week at the movies, you should also get in soon to catch 7 Days in Entebbe. It has its last screening on THIS Thursday, March 29th!
 See you at the movies!
