Greetings, Cinemapolitans!

This is it - Oscar weekend is upon us. In addition to the big celebration (more on that below), we're also adding yet another Academy Award nominee to our screens:
  • Garnering four Oscar® nominations and universal critical acclaim for the career-changing performance by Timothy Spall (The King's Speech, Ginger and Rosa), Mr. Turner sheds light on the life of celebrated 19th century British painter, J.M.W. Turner. Written and directed by Mike Leigh (Vera Drake, Secrets & Lies) the film goes beyond being just a beautifully crafted and photographed period piece. Variety's Scott Foundas calls it a "highly personal study of art, commerce and the glacial progress of establishment tastes, built around a lead performance from longtime Leigh collaborator Timothy Spall that's as majestic as one of Turner's own swirling sunsets."

As a special treat, on Tuesday, February 24th, the 8 pm screening of Mr. Turner will feature an introduction from Frank Robinson, retired director of Cornell's Johnson Museum of Art (and the current chair of the Cinemapolis board).

The other big news for the weekend is the big awards on the big screen! On Sunday, February 22nd, we once again present our And the Winner Is... Fundraising Gala. It's a  special evening featuring fine food from Ithaca’s favorite restaurants; beer, wine, and signature champagne cocktails; and chances for cinephiles to take home prizes of their own with silent auctions and “guess the winners” contests.  Of course, Neil Patrick Harris and the rest of the proceedings from the Dolby Theater will be up on the screens all night, as well. The party runs right through the announcement of the best picture prize!

Only 200 tickets will be sold, so GET YOURS TODAY.

See you at the movies!
