Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Halloween may be behind us, but there will be plenty of scares and screams when the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival comes home to roost in on Wednesday, the 11th. In the meantime, don't miss THREE new openers hitting our screens on Friday:
  • Carey Mulligan (Far from the Madding Crowd, Inside Llewyn Davis) leads an all-star cast in Suffragette, a sweeping new period piece recounting the rise of England's women's suffrage movement. But don't let the lush sets and photography fool you, the script by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Shame) has plenty of bite. As Stephen Farber of the Hollywood Reporter says, "the surprise of Suffragette is how much anger and urgency it contains, and how much new material it unearths."

  • Another strong female role is at the center of The Assassin, the latest from Taiwanese master Hou Hsiao-hsien (Flight of the Red Balloon, Flowers of Shanghai). Shu Qi stars as the titular hired killer in this gorgeous martial arts period piece that eschews some the genre's hallmark tropes. Variety calls it "a mesmerizing slow burn of a martial-arts movie that ... achieves breathtaking new heights of compositional elegance: Shot for shot, it’s perhaps the most ravishingly beautiful film Hou has ever made, and certainly one of his most deeply transporting."

  • And finally, another technical masterpiece comes to our screens in the form of Victoria, Sebastian Schipper's remarkable two-plus hour, all-in-a-single-shot heist picture. Winner of the Silver Bear for Cinematography at the Berlin Film Festival, this tense thriller is much more than a technique gimmick. The Village Voice calls it "a sparse marvel [that] leaves the audience rattled by how small decisions lead to big consequences"
While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch Black Panthers, Coming Home, Grandma, and He Named Me Malala soon. They all leave THIS Thursday (November 5).
 See you at the movies!
