Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Another Oscar hopeful joins our collection of award-season power houses this Friday:
- The work of two visionaries combine as Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master) adapts Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice for the screen. The result is a twisted, twisty, and sometimes goofy detective tale from the Nixon era. Variety's Scott Foundas puts it best: "Anderson's seventh feature film is a groovy, richly funny stoner romp that has less in common with “The Big Lebowski” than with the strain of fatalistic, '70s-era California noirs (“Chinatown,” “The Long Goodbye,” “Night Moves”) in which the question of “whodunit?” inevitably leads to an existential vanishing point."
Also in the coming week, National Theatre Live kicks off 2015 with a striking new dance-theatre piece. With JOHN, DV8 Physical Theatre authentically depicts real-life stories, combining movement and spoken word to create an intense and moving theatrical experience. Containing adult themes, strong language, and nudity, the production is suitable for mature audiences only. JOHN leaps onto the Cinemapolis screen at 6:30 pm on Thurs, Jan 15th and again at 1:30 pm on Sat, Jan 17th.
