Greetings, Cinemapolitans!

A very exciting November is coming up, including the SIXTH Annual Ithaca Fantastik Festival, but first, we close out October with one new opener this Friday:
  • The late Harry Dean Stanton gets one last shot at a lead performance in Lucky, the quirky slice of life from first-time director John Carroll Lynch. Stanton plays the title character, a meandering 90 year old atheist who, after a fall, begins to consider life, death, and the point of it all. Jeanette Catsoulis of the NY Times names it a Critic's Pick, calling it a "movie.. more intent on measuring the weight of a life than contemplating death."

Before we get to the weekend, however, don't forget the trio of special screenings still to come THIS week:

In a tour-de-force performance, writer-actor Aaron Davidman conjures a host of different characters while seeking answers to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in “Wrestling Jerusalem,” a film adaptation of his one-man show. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with political scientist Miram Elman and Women Wage Peace organizer Inbal Shlosberg.

This screening is being organized through the TUGG service, but tickets will also be available at the door.
featuring Q & A w/ scientists from Boyce Thompson Institute & Cornell University
co-presented by BTI and the Cornell Alliance for Science

From Academy Award®-nominated director Scott Hamilton Kennedy and narrated by esteemed science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson, Food Evolution is set amidst the controversy surrounding GMOs and food. Traveling from Hawaiian papaya groves, to banana farms in Uganda to the cornfields of Iowa, “Food Evolution” wrestles with the emotions and the evidence driving one of the most heated arguments of our time.

Join scientists (2 of whom where in the film!) from Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute for a viewing and discussion of the film.

Commemorate the Centennial of the Russian Revolution with this silent masterpiece by Sergei Eisenstein which presents a dramatized version of the mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against their officers. Listed among the best examples of early world cinema, Battleship Potemkin features iconic scenes that continue to influence filmmakers almost 100 years later.  This screening will feature remarks from Ithaca College scholars, including Andrew Thompson and Patricia Zimmermann.
The screening is sponsored by the Departments of Sociology, History, and Politics at Ithaca College; Media Arts, Sciences, And Studies at Ithaca College; the Park Center For Independent Media at Ithaca College, and the ILR School at Cornell University

While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch Breathe and Professor Marston & The Wonder Women. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, October 26th!

 See you at the movies!
