Greetings Cinemapolitans!

We're doing some housecleaning this weekend, as we say goodbye to Jimmy's Hall, Learning to Drive, Listen to Me Marlon, Meru AND Mistress America. They all close on Thursday to make room for three new openers on Friday:
  • The always great Ben Mendelsohn (Place Beyond the Pines, Animal Kingdom) returns to our screens in the subtle gambling movie, Mississippi Grind. The latest from writing/directing team Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson), this throwback to 70s cinema sets Mendehlson's Gerry off on a road trip with fellow gambler Curtis (Ryan Reynolds). Stellar performances from both result in what Variety calls "a picture driven far less by narrative incident than by its gently pulsing comic undercurrents and vivid contemplation of character."

  • Back again after a smash-hit sneak preview, Austrian thriller Goodnight Mommy returns for a week-long run on Friday. Twin boys Lukas and Elias are at the heart of this puzzle of a film as they struggle with a mother returned from facial surgery who doesn't seem herself. Combining elements of horror, psychological thriller, and the surreal, this first feature from Serverin Fiala and Veronika Franz is intricately composed. As the Hollywood Reporter puts it: "The story's acceleration from anxiety to panic to hellish chaos is expertly managed, but more impressively, so is the control of internal narrative logic."

  • Also coming this Friday is a sort of anti-rom-com from writer/director Leslye Headland (Bachelorette). Sleeping with Other People stars Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis as a pair of reunited sex addicts attempting to keep things platonic. As that plan inevitably falls apart, the film eschews the usual rom-com plot devices and replaces them with some honest characters. According to Jesse Hassenger of the A.V. Club: "Sleeping With Other People is very funny (never a sure thing with a rom-com), but more surprising than its laughs are the emotions that sneak up on both the characters and the movie."
Special screenings abound in the coming week, including part of the Ithaca Children's Garden Symposium on Play, the kick off to Silent Movie Month, and the continuation of the Cine con CULTURA and Olive Branch Film series. We also kick off a fall season of live theatre on the big screen with the latest installment from National Theatre Live - George Farquhar's wild comedy of love and cash, The Beaux' Stratagem. Just two chances to see the production that Time Out London calls a "restoration romp." The Beaux' Stratagem will screen on Thursday, October 1st at 6:30 pm and again on Saturday, October 3rd at 1:30 pm.
All these special events mean that regular screenings occasionally get pre-empted. Be sure to read the schedule of showtimes carefully...
 See you at the movies!
