Greetings Cinemapolitans!

July wraps up with a bang, as we open THREE new films on Friday:
  • Viggo Mortensen is the heart and soul of the marvelous ensemble in Captain Fantastic. Actor Matt Ross steps behind the camera to write and direct this Sundance hit about an eccentric, off-the-grid family that is plunged into modern society when tragedy strikes. The resulting roadtrip is a fish out of water tale that leaves Mortensen's patriarch questioning his parenting choices.  Lou Lumenick of the NY Post says it "isn't only one of the year's best movies, but one of the best cast and best acted, right down to the smaller roles."

  • Woody Allen's annual entry into our schedule also arrives on Friday. With Café Society, he transports us back to 1930s Hollywood for a lavish romantic comedy that follows a young writer as he makes his way through the lush nightlife of the era. The stellar cast includes Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, and Parker Posey.  Jonathan Romney of Screen Daily calls it "a bittersweet comedy of manners that sees Allen pushing the boat out stylistically and in narrative ambition."

  • Finally, sweetie darlings, watch out for Edina and Patsy as they make their way across the pond and splash onto the big screen for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. For the uninitiated, "Ab Fab" was a broad and boozy comedy staple on UK television in the 90s (and later on cable in the U.S.) and is the brainchild of Dawn French and series co-star Jennifer Saunders. That show and this movie follow the champagne-swilling misadventures of Saunders' Edina and Joanna Lumley's Patsy as they careen through a life of high fashion and low morals.  The Hollywood Reporter sums it up: "Stuffed to its statement earrings with celebrities, fashion folk and comedian chums making cameos, this breezy blast of bawdy jokes and Bollinger product placement should lift spirits in a post-Brexit Britain."
And don't forget as we head toward the weekend, we have another entry in our special National Theatre Live season of encores and an opportunity to revisit the performance that earned Helen Mirren a 2015 Tony award. In The Audience, Mirren reprises her Academy Award®-winning role as Queen Elizabeth II. Two chances to see the production the NY Times calls "smashing"--on Thursday, July 28th at 6:30 pm and again on Saturday, July 30th at 1:30 pm.
While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch Equals, Our Kind of Traitor, Swiss Army Man, and Tickled soon. They all leave THIS Thursday, July 28th!

 See you at the movies!
