Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Another exciting week is on the way, with live theatre, special filmmaker appearances, and TWO new films opening:
  • Indie favorite Todd Solondz (Happiness, Welcome to the Dollhouse) returns to our screens after several years of absence. Like his previous films, Wiener-Dog highlights the poor behavior of a large ensemble cast of top-class actors, but this time he's pieced their stories together in an anthology of tales, all unified by the central role of the titular Dachshund.  Don't let the cute and cuddly lead character fool you, though. Eric Kohn of IndieWire calls it "somehow hilarious and gloomy at the same time... a big middle finger to anyone who wishes Solondz would lighten up."

  • Academy Award winning documentarian Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) once again tackles creativity and the power of song with The Music of Strangers. This compelling dive into the life and work of renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his Silk Road Project showcases what Leah Pickett of the Chicago Reader calls  "the musicians' mutual desire to forge meaningful connections across cultures, an affirmative answer to Leonard Bernstein's question of whether music can truly serve as a 'universal language'." Don't miss this limited engagement.
Event before the weekend gets underway, we have the return of National Theatre Live to our screens for the beginning of a special season of encore presentations. Featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from host of the The Late Late Show, James Corden, the uproarious One Man, Two Guvnors was a runaway hit both in London’s West End and on Broadway. A raucous farce of mistaken, stolen, and misplaced identities, One Man, Two Guvnors screens at Cinemapolis on Thursday, July 7th at 6:30 pm and again on Saturday, July 9th at 1:30 pm.

On Monday, be sure to catch the first of two local filmmaker appearances this week. Recent I.C. grad and College Television Award winner Leah Galant will be on hand for a special screening of her documentary short The Provider.  This timely film follows Shannon Carr, a Texas doctor who travels out of state to perform abortions due to the restrictive rules closing down clinics in the Lone Star State. Liz Gipson of Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes will join Galant for a Q & A following the screening, which takes place on Monday, July 11 at 7 pm. All tickets are $8.

Another pair of local filmmakers bring their work to our screens on Tuesday, July 12th. Jesse and Jeremy Veverka will lead a Q & A after the screening of their new documentary Passfire, a film about fireworks culture across the globe. Continue your independence day celebration with this spotlight on the world's most amazing fireworks, the people who make them and the cultures behind them. The film screens on Tuesday, July 12th at 7 pm.  All tickets are $9.

While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch Dark Horse and Weiner soon. They both leave THIS Thursday, July 7th!

 See you at the movies!
