Greetings Cinemapolitans!

We're VERY excited to announce a special, one-day only screening event at the theater coming in the next week, but first the weekend begins with TWO new films that open Friday:
  • Academy award nominee Joseph Cedar (Footnote) returns to our screens with Norman. The full title of the film gives away all the plot you need to know: "The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer." Richard Gere stars as the titular "fixer," a man who fancies himself a low-level peddler of influence among the monied and political elite of NYC. Whether or not he lives up to his self-image is up to the viewer—and the plot—to decide. A.O. Scott of the NY Times gives a Critic's Pick stamp of approval, saying "It’s only after the plot has unfolded, with antic elegance and brazen unpredictability, that the risks involved become apparent....It’s startling, given how much farce is on display ... how much genuine feeling also comes through."

  • Also opening in a limited engagement is the debut film from documentarian (and actor) Raz Degan. The Last Shaman tracks the journey of James Freeman, a young man suffering from debilitating depression, as he seeks out the healing powers of ayahuasca in his travels throughout Peru. As Ben Kenigsberg of the NY Times says, "It's possible to have doubts about ayahuasca and still find Mr. Freeman's resolve uplifting."

In the coming week, we'll have numerous community rental events that include a silent film competition from the Wharton Studio Museum, a screening of experimental shorts being featured at Cannes, and the latest installment from ICUC-ME. We'll ALSO be presenting our own VERY special events:

The Family Classics Picture Show continues its 3rd year on Sunday, May 21st at 2pm with a screening of The Thrill of It All.

Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for an entire family. The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor The Ainslie Reilly Group at Morgan Stanley, with additional support from Mama Goose.

ONE DAY ONLY
CINEMA EVENT

The tale of the Grateful Dead is inspiring, complicated, and downright messy. A tribe of contrarians, they made art out of open-ended chaos and inadvertently achieved success on their own terms. Never-before-seen footage and interviews offer this unprecedented and unvarnished look at the life of the Dead.

While you're planning your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch The Dinner, Graduation, and RiskThey all play their last shows THIS Thursday, May 18th!
 See you at the movies!
