Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Prepare yourselves for a busy weekend, as we bring a trio of new films to the screens on Friday :
  • Sally Field makes a quirky and touching return to the screen in Hello, My Name is Doris. Field brings the eccentric title character to life in this film that blends elements of workplace comedy and culture clash, but at its heart, is an unlikely office romance. As Manohla Dargis of the NY Times praises,  it "uses this funny, outwardly ridiculous character to tell a simple story about a love that rarely speaks its name, including in movies: that of an older woman for a much younger man."

  • Director Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) is back with another study of a flawed and broken lead character. In Demolition, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a young widower trying desperately to remember how to feel loss. The supporting cast includes Naomi Watts and Chris Cooper, but this is Gyllenahaal's show, and Variety calls it "his best performance since 'Brokeback Mountain.'"

  • Marguerite is a French gem starring Catherine Frot (Haute Cuisine) as a tone-deaf 1920s aristocrat who convinces Paris that she's a star singer. It's a rollicking farce, but it manages to have some pathos as well. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle says, "We laugh during "Marguerite," but we don't laugh at Marguerite, because somehow director and co-writer Xavier Giannoli persuades us to see in her the universal tragedy."
Foul deeds will rise again! Looking ahead to the end of the week, don't miss a special opportunity to catch an encore screening of Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet. This National Theatre Live presentation has sold out FIVE previous screenings, so be sure to get tickets in advance! The encores will screen on Thursday, April 14 at 6:30 pm and again on Saturday, April 16 at 1:30.

While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch Lady in the Van and Where to Invade Next soon. They both leave THIS Thursday, April 7th!

 See you at the movies!
