Greetings Cinemapolitans!

It's been getting cold outside in Ithaca, so it will feel good to let Golden Globe nominee Maggie Smith in to warm our hearts:
  • Based on the real life events of playwright Alan Bennett, The Lady in the Van casts Smith as Miss Shepherd, a homeless woman who takes up residence in a beat-up camper on Bennett's block. The resulting warm comedy is perfect vehicle for Smith's performance.  Time Out London's Cath Clarke calls it "a peppery, unsentimental performance. She's hysterically funny, till she's not - flooring you as the regret and tragedy behind Miss Shepherd's vagabond life is revealed."
In addition to this new film, we've got a number of special events coming up.
On Friday, February 19th at 6 pm, we welcome local filmmaker (and former Cinemapolis staffer) Chris Foito back for a special screening of his latest documentary on The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an invasive species that is decimating forests all over the east coast. This one-time only event will be followed by a Q & A with Foito, forest entomologist Mark Whitmore, and Hilary Lambert of the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network.  Tickets for the screening are just $6 and are on sale now.
On Sunday, February 21st at 2pm, a double-header of special events begins with the return of our Family Classics Picture Show and a screening of the 1953 comedy Roman Holiday.  The series introduces the magic of cinema to parents and kids with a year-long series of fun and affordable Sunday matinees.

Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for an entire family. The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor Wells Fargo Advisors, with additional support from Mama Goose.
Then, at 4:30 on Sunday, the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival takes over theater 5 for a special pre-fest kick off event: a one-time only screening of the internationally acclaimed hit Pakistanian film Shah

Adnan Sarwar, the film’s producer, director, screenwriter, actor, and composer, will be present at the screening. Raza Rumi, City of Asylum Writer in Residence for the Ithaca College Honors Program, will moderate the post-screening discussion. Tickets are now on sale for this special screening!
While you're planning your next week at the movies, take a close look at the showtimes. We're squeezing seven films and many special events into our five screens, so some regular showtimes have been pre-empted.
 See you at the movies!
