Subject: 🎥 Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema Listings for Jan 21, 2021 🎥

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

We're heading toward the end of January already, and we have two new (and VERY different!) films to add to the virtual cinema slate this weekend. Thanks to our friends from Ithaca Fantastik for keeping the fun rolling through our pandemic closure!

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

VIRTUAL CINEMA
THE REASON I JUMP

“This is a wondrous work… that enlightens and informs but that is also ravishing to behold.”

Based on the best-selling book by Naoki Higashida, THE REASON I JUMP is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity through the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world. The film blends Higashida’s revelatory insights into autism, written when he was just 13, with intimate portraits of five remarkable young people. It opens a window for audiences into an intense and overwhelming, but often joyful, sensory universe.

Moments in the lives of each of the characters are linked by the journey of a young Japanese boy through an epic landscape; narrated passages from Naoki’s writing reflect on what his autism means to him and others, how his perception of the world differs, and why he acts in the way he does: the reason he jumps.

The film distils these elements into a sensually rich tapestry that leads us to Naoki’s core message: not being able to speak does not mean there is nothing to say.

DIRECTOR: Jerry Rothwell

SCREENWRITER: Naoki Higashida (based on the book by)

CAST: Jim Fujiwara, David Mitchell, Jordan O’Donegan

VIRTUAL CINEMA
PG: PSYCHO GOREMAN

“Psycho Goreman is the complete package. Ripe with huge laughs, it bolsters massive creativity that would make the studio system blush and comes with enough gore to flood an abattoir. This is the kind of genre cinema that we dream of.”

Siblings Mimi and Luke unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord who was entombed on Earth millions of years ago after a failed attempt to destroy the universe. They nickname the evil creature Psycho Goreman (or “PG” for short) and use the magical amulet they discovered to force him to obey their childish whims.

It isn’t long before PG’s reappearance draws the attention of intergalactic friends and foes from across the cosmos and a rogues’ gallery of alien combatants converges in small-town suburbia to battle for the fate of the galaxy.

DIRECTOR: Steven Kostanski

WRITER: Steven Kostanski

CAST: Nita-Josee Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey and Matthew Ninaber

THANKS SENATOR SCHUMER!

The COVID relief package that passed in Congress at the end of last year includes the bipartisan Save Our Stages Act, which is amazing news for indie movie theaters, live theatres, and cultural institutions in our region.

New Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer worked tirelessly and successfully to secure this aid for New York’s cultural institutions. This assistance is critical to keeping the industry alive, supporting the livelihoods of entrepreneurs and workers and protecting a critical piece of New York’s economy. We also want to acknowledge the support of all the bipartisan Senators and Members of Congress, including Senator Gillibrand and Congressman Reed, who worked to ensure that movie theaters could get the relief we need to survive the financial impact of the pandemic.

CONTINUING ON VIRTUAL CINEMA

Many thanks to all who made a year-end contribution to the Cinemapolis Annual Fund. We exceeded our 2020 fundraising goal, and your support will help us make it through the winter. COVID numbers in our region are again on the rise, so we're holding off on re-opening for public screenings.

However, STAY TUNED for news about private theater rentals coming soon to Cinemapolis!

Hope to see you at the movies again soon!

Executive Director
