“This is a non-violent demonstration. No one should point weapons at us. We are not threatening anyone. We are standing here quietly demonstrating. It’s legal, it’s democratic - that’s what we do.”
These are the words of Yael Vurgan, our Israeli Coordinator, standing alongside Israeli and Palestinian activists demonstrating together against a law that deepens a system of apartheid - one legal system for one people, and another for the other.
To continue our weekend of action, we demonstrated across the country to call for an end to the war with Iran. It is clear to us that our leadership is not pursuing long-term peace, but deepening cycles of violence - wars without political horizon, where civilians on all sides pay the price.
The largest demonstration took place in Tel Aviv which was allowed under limited conditions by the Home Front Command, following pressure and intervention from the High Court. But still, the police moved in to break it up using excessive force, and arresting protesters, including our own activity coordinator.
This is how it is today: those who resist violence through nonviolence are treated as a threat, while those that entrench facist inequality and dispossession move forward unchecked.
To understand the situation better - you are invited to join us on Thursday 9th April at 8pm Jerusalem time for an online briefing. |
