The Joint Nakba Remembrance Ceremony - July 12th, 2021

The Joint Nakba Remembrance Ceremony broadcast will take place this coming Monday, July 12th, the date of the Palestinian deportation from Lydda and Ramle.

Only through acknowledgement and inclusive conversations do we stand a chance to reach a resolution that will bring peace to everyone here, from the sea to the Jordan River.

Campaign Against The Illegal Settlement Evyatar

One of the hottest topics these past months has been the establishment of the new illegal settlement Evyatar on the lands of the Palestinian community of Beita. Israeli settlers decided to occupy more lands, and within a few days have illegally and violently built dozens of housing units while receiving help from the Israeli army. Four local Palestinians have been killed while protesting and trying to disrupt the settlers’ construction.

Our activists have joined the local Palestinians in protests calling to stop this war crime immediately and restore the area to its condition of just two months ago.

You can imagine that building a settlement that houses hundreds of people, in such a short amount of time, would cost a lot of money. So where does the money come from?

Well, a large part of it, about 1,200,000 NIS as reported, has been crowdfunded. We looked into the matter and found that the bank account which facilitates the crowdfund, and transfers the funds to settlers’ organizations who commit illegal activities using them, is Bank Leumi.

The funds being used to enable activities that allegedly violate several different Israeli laws, as well as international law, including anti-laundering laws, acceptance of funds under false pretenses, and more.

Our lawyer - human rights attorney Eitay Mack - wrote to Bank Leumi and to the Banking Supervision Authority, demanding an immediate freeze of these accounts.

In cooperation with several partner organizations, we published an ad on the front page of Haaretz last Friday, and ran an extensive campaign, to call the new Israeli government to evacuate all of Evyatar’s illegal settlers and to demolish all construction there rather than going through with the embarrassing “compromise” they reached which will house all the existing homes with Israeli soldiers until an official land survey will be conducted.

We can already tell you that this land survey conducted by the State of Israel will not find that the lands belong to Palestinians - they never do, which means that in a few months the illegal settlement will be given Israel’s “kosher” stamp.

This shameful “compromise” legitimizes the settlers’ illegal and violent actions, and sets another precedent for similar enterprises in the future.

This madness has to stop, especially now when there are so-called left-wing parties within the Israeli government.

Products From Settlements In The Occupied Territories

Before the new Israeli government came into power a few weeks ago, we submitted an official plea to the Israeli Consumer Protection And Fair Trade Authority, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Economy, calling to enforce the law about pertaining to foreign-made goods on settlement products.

We found out that many products that are being manufactured in settlements are being marketed in Israel as Israeli-made products, which gains them false legitimacy and is misleading to Israeli consumers. This is done in spite of Israel’s official policy, which clearly defines said settlements as being located outside of Israel’s legal borders.

In the absence of a reply, let alone any enforcement of the law, we decided to help by going out to stores that market such products ourselves, and inform Israeli consumers about the real place of manufacture of these products by placing informative stickers on them.

After the Israeli government changed, we resubmitted our plea to the relevant authorities and personnel.

This week we received a reply from the Israeli Consumer Protection And Fair Trade Authority, which agrees with our plea regarding the current law and the present problematic situation when it comes to the accurate marking of products. However, they claim that, as far as they know, there is no other country in the occupied territories and that it is not under their jurisdiction to enforce the law in the given situation. So the authorities agree with us that the products we refer to are not being manufactured in Israel, but refuse to force the manufacturers who make them to inform the public about the real place of manufacture.

There is no other place in the world that receives the same treatment. No products that are manufactured in China, for example, receive the same lack of enforcement by Israeli authorities. This is another example of how the occupation is designed from the top in a systematic way.

A Tour in Akka

We hosted a tour in Akka, one of Israel’s largest and oldest mixed-cities, where we met with local residents who shared their views and experiences of the economic and social challenges in the city.

It is essential that communities like the one in Akka get their voices heard, and that people don’t just hear about them from mainstream media channels. We believe that such grassroots activities allow people to personify what they hear about on the news, and are an important motor for change.

How The U.S Can Play A Better Role In Advancing Peace Between Israelis And Palestinians

Our Israeli CEO, Yonatan Gher, and lawyer Eitay Mack have published an opinion piece in Al Jazeera, where they describe the complex relationship between Israel and the US, and call for the U.S. to condition its financial aid to Israel as a way to improve Israel’s human rights track-record:
