Subject: January Update

Dear Friends

Israel is once again making the international news. Headline splashes about how the vaccination drive is leading the world, and what a shining example we can set to other countries floundering in our footsteps. But where is the other side of this narrative? Where are those same editors when it comes to the lack of vaccinations available to Palestinians or how occupation doesn’t extend to duty of care?

The Coronavirus pandemic has highlighted global inequality. How can one person deserve to be vaccinated, while their neighbour is not deemed worthy? None of the almost 5 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza have been offered vaccinations - this is the stark analogy between the occupier and the occupied. This is why we keep going - we will end the occupation and we will do it together. Israelis and Palestinians - empowered, united and equal.

See below for some of the ways we are working together towards peace. Please, support our work. Your generosity keeps our movement strong, and together we can make peace a reality.

Democracy and Justice

On the 1st January, Harun Abu Aram was shot and paralyzed by Israeli forces in the Palestinian village of al-Rakiz. Abu Aram was one of several villagers rebuilding their previously demolished home, when soldiers arrived and ordered them to stop, claiming it was illegal despite the land being privately owned. In a usual tactic designed to deprive residents of Area C of construction tools, the soldiers began to drag away the power generator, which Abu Aram, who was unarmed, resisted. He was shot in the neck with live ammunition.

Combatants for Peace are one of the groups demonstrating every Friday in the village of A-Tuwani, south of Hebron. We are Israelis and Palestinians marching together, to demand justice for Harun and his family, and an end to the violence of occupation.

In a further breach of democracy, Palestinian activist Sami Al-Harini from Tuwani village, south of Hebron, was arrested following his attendance at a peaceful protest in solidarity with Haruun Abu Aram. Sami is currently being held in the military Ofer prison.

Combatants for Peace joined local partners to stage a demonstration outside the detention facility holding Sami, calling for his immediate release. More details here

Construction Instead of Destruction

Rebuilding homes

Activists spent much of December and January participating in the rebuilding of the Palestinian village of Humsa, after it was destroyed by the military last November. Spending about 25 workdays in the last few weeks, our activists have helped to build around 25 new homes and shelters for six families. The new structures include homes for families as well as shelters for the shepherding community’s livestock. Our efforts to rebuild the village will continue to be organized until the reconstruction is complete.

Rebuilding a Road in Shushalah

Combatants for Peace volunteers from the Bethlehem group joined residents and helped to repair part of the road leading to the villager’s homes, destroyed by the military. The village of Shushalah has existed since the Ottoman era, and must be preserved and protected. Together, our activists rebuilt the road providing new freedom of movement to the community.

Planting Seeds

Activists from the Bethlehem group planted grape seedlings on farmland owned by Khaldoun Sabih from Al Khader town, south of Bethlehem. The most recent attack on Sabih’s land took place last April, when settlers uprooted 500 olive trees. Immediately following the attack on Khaldoun’s land in April, the movement’s activists planted more than 200 olive trees in place of those that the settlers uprooted, this planting was a continuation of that rehabilitation.

Defeating Annexation

The ‘Trump deal of the Century’ unveiled at the beginning of the year, threatened to annex parts of the West Bank, once again claiming sovereignty over Palestinian land. The plan included building more settlements, relegating Palestinian residents to small enclaves, and further stripping people of their human rights and self determination.

In April Bibi went one step further, announcing an annexation plan that would devastate the Palestinian community, effectively claiming their lands without granting the people any basic rights. We wrote to 120 Knesset members reminding them of their personal liability, and the legal consequences under international law that they would be facing were they to support and enable this annexation. In addition to this, we were on the ground everyday, building coalitions to protest this horrifying unilateral action. We also sent letters to forgein heads of State and the UN security council demanding action.

We won, and for now anyway, official annexation is off the table.

The Annual Israeli/Palestinian Memorial Ceremony will be broadcast live again
this year. Each and every year we unite on Memorial Day in order to remember
all the victims of this ongoing conflict, on both sides. We are building a captivating event which will once again remind the world - ‘War is Not an Act of Fate, but a Human Choice!’

Saturday 15th May, 2021

The Nakba Day Ceremony will recall the agonies of the year 1948; the year that marked a significant milestone in the history of the Palestinian people. More than 700,000 Palestinians became refugees as they were expelled from their homes and their villages and cities were destroyed. The ceremony will commemorate this memory through an online broadcast to inform the international audience of what the Nakba means to the Palestinian people.
