Israel uses many tactics to control and displace Palestinian communities. Fom turning a blind eye to settler violence, to withholding building and infrastructure permits and preventing access to drinking water, to declaring land as a militarised “firing zone'' and therefore erasing entire villages - we have seen them all. One of the areas designated for clearance is Masafer Yatta, comprising of eight villages in the South Hebron Hills, with a population of 1300 Palestinian reidents. The case against the demolition was heard on Tuesday in the Israeli High Court of Justice, and following an adjournment, a new date for the hearing will be set.
Combatants for Peace members gathered outside the High Court with around 150 Palestinian and Israeli residents and activists to show our collective support for the people of Masafer Yatta, and let them know that we stand with them, and will defend their right to stay in their homes and on their land. It was deeply moving to join the members of the community of all ages who led the action, and be together in dignified defiance, and on the right side of history.
We will keep you updated on this decision, but it sadly won’t be the last time we call out injustice or have to fight for freedom. We are showing others that being passive can’t change anything, and we hope that you continue to join us and support us as we prove that there is another way, and together we can make a difference.
