Ex-Gays Urge United Nations to Verify Stories of "Therapy Torture" Before Allowing Witnesses to Speak at November 10 Hearing in Geneva

Washington, D.C. – Today, Voice of the Voiceless is strongly urging the United Nations (UN) to verify so-called stories of "therapy torture" before allowing gay activists to make statements at a November 10 hearing before the UN Committee Against Torture in Geneva. Voice of the Voiceless, whose 2014 campaign #TherapyEquality, was responsible in helping to defeat 14 bills across state legislatures that sought to ban therapy for minors who experience unwanted same-sex attractions.

"This is yet another shameless strategy by gay activists to equate life-saving therapy with torture, and they even have the nerve to use discredited witnesses like Samuel Brinton, whose story has yet to be verified by gay media friendly to his cause," commented Christopher Doyle, President of Voice of the Voiceless, the only anti-defamation league for former homosexuals, individuals with unwanted same-sex attractions, and their families.

In the past couple of years, Brinton's story of "therapy torture" has been reported by The Huffington Post, Time, and Politico, but even when gay media tried to verify this report— they couldn't. Even anti-ex-gay activist Wayne Besen declared, "[U]ntil he [Brinton] provides more information to verify his experience, he makes it impossible for us to use him as an example. Indeed, it would be grossly irresponsible for us to do so." But that hasn't stopped radical gay activists groups from exploiting Brinton's tall tale to push their agenda onto the international level.

"It is inconceivable that major media outlets continue to report this troubled young man's questionable story, yet no one seems to believe it's important to verify the details to ensure accuracy," commented Doyle. "We witnessed this same problem last year in the New Jersey hearings to ban change therapy for minors, when a young Transgendered woman, Brielle Goldani, claimed to have been sent to a conversion therapy torture camp called 'True Directions' in 1997. After investigating these claims of electroshock with the Ohio Secretary of State and Attorney General's office, we discovered that 'True Directions' did indeed exist, but only in a 1999 movie starring drag queen Ru Paul."

It was later discovered that Goldani fabricated the entire account of "therapy torture" while gay activists in New Jersey continued to advance tall tales such as "six other therapy torture camps exists around the United States" in order to convince Governor Chris Christie to sign the ban into law. To this day, Goldani and members of Garden State Equality have yet to be held accountable in the media for their lies, and because of it, sexually abused children in New Jersey who are confused about their sexual orientation are prohibited from getting help with a licensed mental health care provider.

"We are calling on the entire international community to put a stop to this madness and demand the UN verify these outrageous claims before granting such a platform to radical gay activists who are pedaling lies and misinformation," commented Doyle. "We also believe it's important that former homosexuals who have changed sexual orientation be given a chance to speak at the hearing, so that the international community understands the potential human rights violations of denying the right of self-determination to those who desperately seek help from qualified, mental health practitioners. One of the members of our Advisory Board members has said on the record that if not for therapy to help him change sexual orientation, he would have committed suicide. Will the international community hear his cries too?"
