ACTION ALERT: THE FUTURE OF WASHINGTON, D.C. CHILDREN IS AT RISK
Dear Friends,
I am writing you today to communicate the urgent nature of a bill in Washington, D.C. that seeks to take away the rights of clients under the age of 18 who desire to overcome unwanted same-sex attractions with the help of a licensed mental health provider.
In June, Bill 20-501 was passed out of the Washington, D.C. Counsel Committee on Health, despite the following:
1) According to a Freedom of Information Act request, not one single complaint has ever been filed by a minor in Washington, D.C. alleging any type of abuse from a licensed counselor trying to force or coerce a minor into changing their sexual orientation. According to Bill 20-501, this is the primary intended purpose of the bill, but yet, there is no evidence that this has ever occurred!
2) More false and misleading testimony by gay activists at the hearing. Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Counsel described the nature of this testimony in a recent op-ed:
One witness at a recent hearing on DC's proposed therapy ban, "gay identified"
psychologist Dr. Gregory Jones, included this quote from a recent article on the
SOCE bans that appeared on Time's website:
Sam
Brinton says that his father first tried physical abuse to rid his
young son of
homosexual feelings. When that didn't work, Brinton's
parents turned to
something called reparative therapy. Some of the
memories are hazy more than
10 years later, but Brinton does remember . .
. there was aversion therapy, during
which pictures of men touching men
would be accompanied by the application of
heat or ice. "It was pretty
much mental torture," Brinton says.
Some pro-gay media tried to verify this report—and couldn't.
Even Wayne Besen,
the most rabid "anti-ex-gay" activist, declared,
"[U]ntil he [Brinton] provides more
information to verify his
experience, he makes it impossible for us to use him as an
example.
Indeed, it would be grossly irresponsible for us to do so."
Yet
what Besen called "grossly irresponsible" (using Brinton's implausible
story as
an example), some opponents of therapy freedom (and their
allies in the media) are
perfectly willing to do.
Apparently, the Washington, D.C. City Counsel has no problem accepting this
testimony as a part of their effort to take away the rights of young people
struggling with their unwanted homosexual feelings.
3. Over ten ex-gays testified at the hearing as having changed their sexual orientation to varying degrees, yet, were disrespected by openly gay Council Member David Catania, who scolded them as being "mentally ill" for wanting to change their sexual orientation. Yet, it would be perfectly legal and mentally healthy for a licensed mental health provider in Washington, D.C. to counsel a minor to change their gender by encouraging hormone-blocking medication and surgical removal of genitals, despite research indicating that suicide rates among those who pursue reassignment surgery is 20 times higher than the suicide
rate among those who do not pursue such treatments!
The bill is being marked up today, October 15, and poised to pass the Counsel, of which 13 of 14 members have co-sponsored the legislation. After Voice of the Voiceless has been instrumental in stopping 14 anti-therapy bills in state legislatures across the United States in 2014, it's clear that gay activists are desperate to score a cheap victory in the most liberal jurisdiction in the country, and they will stop at nothing to put children in harm's way, including lie, cheat, and fabricate stories of "torture" and "abuse" that simply do not exist!
