| Karol Jozef Wojtyla was the second of two sons and the youngest of three children. Karol enrolled in the University of krakow in 1938 and majored in drama. He began surreptitious courses in the seminary of Krakow in 1942. He was ordained a priest on November 1, 1946. He was adventurous and enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping, accompanied by prayer, outdoor Masses and theological discussions as a priest in Krakow. He was appointed Bishop of Krakow in 1958 yet continued to live a simple, adventurous life that witnessed to all with whom he came in contact. He was elected Pope October 16, 1978. His predecessor, John Paul I, died after only 33 days as Pope. He took the name John Paul II in honor of John Paul I. |
