St. Hubert Hunter's Prayer Diptych

 St. Hubert

St. Hubert was born in what is now
France in the year 656 as the eldest
son of the Duke of Aquitaine.
Growing up in nobility, St. Hubert
grew to have a passion for the
pastime of the age: hunting. During
that time, wars were fought on
horseback with bows and arrows.
Seeing the potential to grow both
as a hunter and a soldier, Hubert
 found himself always seeking
 the chase.

Although St. Hubert was brought up in the Catholic Faith, he never took it seriously and was always more concerned with status and worldly achievements. His mother constantly prayed that he would turn to the Lord, and at the age of 26, St. Hubert married a devout woman named Floribonne. It was through her that St. Hubert began to rekindle the faith he learned as a child. However, shortly after the birth of their firstborn son, Floribert, Floribonne died. What little faith St. Hubert began to cultivate was quickly extinguished as St. Hubert was filled with grief, causing great confusion and anger towards God. Abandoning the faith, he once again returned to his forest-dwelling lifestyle.

On a Good Friday, St. Hubert set out on horseback to begin a hunt as usual. While in the woods, he came upon a large stag. Setting up to take the shot, St. Hubert readied his bow when the deer suddenly turned his head and he noticed something between its antlers. What he saw was a crucifix radiant with light! He then heard a voice say, “Hubert, unless you turn to the Lord and lead a holy life, you shall quickly fall into the abyss of Hell.” St. Hubert quickly prostrated himself and asked, “Lord, what would you have me do?”. The voice replied, “Go and seek (Bishop) Lambert”.

Setting out to the Dutch city of Maastricht, he quickly found Bishop Lambert who received him kindly and became his spiritual director. St. Hubert immediately renounced his prestigious life and accolades he had accumulated throughout the years. He gave up his noble birthright to his younger brother, and also made him guardian of his infant son, Floribert. St. Hubert then distributed all his personal wealth to the poor, studied for priesthood, and was shortly ordained.

When Bishop Lambert passed, St. Hubert was made bishop of the people. He was known for his dynamic style of preaching, often using his skills with the bow to attract crowds to come listen to the Word of God. St. Hubert rekindled the spark of faith for many who were lost, and many pagans that heard him speak converted to Christianity. St. Hubert lived to be about 71; he received a vision of his death and then soon after died reciting the “Our Father”.

During St. Hubert's religious encounter, the deer is said to have lectured Hubert on holding animals to a higher regard and having compassion for them as God's creatures. It elaborated on the ethics behind hunting, and explained to St. Hubert that a hunter should only shoot when a humane, clean and quick kill is assured. Also, that one should only shoot stags past their prime breeding years, and never shoot a female with young in tow.

St. Hubert's feast day is November 3rd, and this marks the official start to the hunting season in multiple European countries. On this day, some places will replace the organ music for mass with hunting horns. Hunters, along with their horses and dogs, also receive a special blessing.
