Subject: How to: Pray the Chaplet of Seven Sorrows!

Today we celebrate “The Seven Dolors (Sorrows)” of Mary, also known as the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Originating in the 12th century, this special devotion takes its roots from Sacred Scripture and Christian piety. It focuses on the intense sufferings Mary experienced during her life. The first suffering stems from Simeon’s prophecy to her as he paints a picture of what was to come in her time: “He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.” Luke 2:34-35. This marked the first of the seven dolors Mary was to endure.

Just as Jesus suffered, so too did Mary every step of the way, from Bethlehem to Calvary. For this reason she is able to understand us, her children, and console us. Whenever we find ourselves in physical or moral suffering, let us remember to turn to Mary and ask
for her intercession.

"Truly, O Blessed Mother, a sword has pierced your heart... He died in body through a love greater than anyone had known. She died in spirit through a love unlike any other since His."

 - Bernard of Clairvaux

Chaplet of Seven Sorrows

The Chaplet of Seven Sorrows came from this devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows. It is structured similarly to a rosary, with seven sets of seven Hail Mary’s. Each set is centered around one of Mary’s sorrows upon which we meditate.

Here is a step-by-step guide to pray this chaplet.

Let us pray:

Our Lady of Sorrows,

 Intercede for us!
