What is St. Hubert's Story?
According to legend, Hubert (aka Hubertus or Eustace) was in the Ardennes Forest on Good Friday chasing a magnificent stag when suddenly the deer stopped in its tracks and spun around to face him. He then saw a glowing crucifix hovering between the antlers of the deer. A voice came from the crucifix that said: |

"Hubert, unless you turn to the Lord, and lead a holy life, you shall quickly fall into the abyss of hell."

| The voice then instructed him to seek out Bishop Lambert of Maastricht. After the death of his wife, Hubert started spiritual direction under bishop Lambert and was later ordained a priest by him. Eventually, Hubert succeeded his mentor and became the bishop of Maastricht and Liege. Bishop Hubert spent the remainder of his life as a hunter for souls.
St. Hubert is the patron saint of hunters, hunting dogs, forest workers, animal shelters, and those with hydrophobia.
