Christians have used these prayer tools for centuries to enable penitents to properly kneel in prayer while maintaining an upright posture. This posture not only enables the use of one’s hands in praying the rosary or holding a prayer book, but also orients the body and directs the face toward gazing upon a crucifix in silent contemplation.
