"Assumption of the Virgin" by Bergonone

The original image was painted on a board as part of a polyptych and shows Mary being assumed and crowned in one celestial motion. Surrounding angels and heavenly hosts play music to praise Our Lord and honor Our Lady in the momentous occasion. The yellow angels surrounding Mary are reminiscent of a mandorla, a medieval diamond shaped backdrop, symbolizing an opening into heaven.
