St. Therese of Lisieux: The Little Flower Feast Day: Oct, 1st |
|
St. Thérèse, often called the Little Flower, entered the Carmelite order in France by special dispensation when she was 15. Young, small in stature, and forbidden to do great deeds within the order, she sought a way to show her love of God. Her resulting "Little Way" emphasized small acts of sacrifice rather than heroics. After her death at the age of 24, her sisters compiled her writings. Her "Little Way" was an instant sensation among thousands of Catholics and others eager to find goodness and holiness in ordinary lives. In 1925, she was canonized. Perhaps the most beloved saint of the 20th Century, St. Thérèse is one of only three female saints to be declared by the Vatican to be a "Doctor of the Universal Church". |
