Subject: "I could only thank him with my eyes"

I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red. She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meant that I should persevere in purity, and the red that I should become a martyr.
From a young age Maximilian Kolbe dealt with various illnesses including tuberculosis. During WWII, he hid, fed and clothed 3,000 Polish refugees, for which he was sentenced to Auschwitz. During his time there, Kolbe was singled-out by a violent ex-criminal, who brutally mistreated him.

Yet in the face of all these vigorous hardships, Kolbe maintained a deep trust and faith in the Lord. He would share what small rations he received, and his strength and dignity was a light to his fellow inmates.

One day, the camp commander chose 10 random prisoners to be starved to death. Although he was not selected, Maximilian Kolbe volunteered himself and took a complete stranger's place.

That stranger, Franciszek Gajowniczek, survived and said,
It is said that while in the starvation bunker, Kolbe led the others in prayer and hymns. Witnesses say that he could be seen kneeling or standing in the center of the pit, smiling and looking cheerfully upon the guards.

After two weeks without food and water, only Kolbe and a few other inmates were alive. Because the guards wanted the bunker empty, the men were executed by a lethal injection. He passed away on August 15th, 1941, and those present said he lifted up his arm and calmly accepted his death.

May we learn to grow and trust in the Lord as St. Maximilian Kolbe did.
