The AGM might be our biggest news this month, but it is certainly not the only thing going on. We have recently launched the final episode of the first series of Power in the City podcast, so make sure to give it a listen, and subscribe for any future episodes!

We are also hosting a workshop with Samuel Johnson-Schlee, looking at historic communications from the gas industry and what we can learn for the retrofit and energy transition - Gaseous Domesticities looks set to be an extremely interesting workshop and learning opportunity!

Join the Carbon Co-op board

Could you help tackle climate change whilst being part of an inspiring and unique community energy organisation? Carbon Co-op's Annual General Meeting is approaching and we are recruiting new board members. Board members are elected by the membership, from the membership, so if you'd like to stand you need to be a current member or intend to join the membership. We're not only looking for board members, if you are curious you can become an observer and attend meetings to get a feel for what's involved before joining at a later date. Board membership involves attending six, two hour meetings a year, in person or by video call.

To express an interest in joining the board or becoming an observer, please register your details using the button below. (Deadline is 5pm, Thursday 23rd march 2023).

Could you be a retrofit champion case study?

We are working with the Manchester School of Architecture to create a series of case studies, showcasing the nuts and bolts of retrofit for the general public to inspire and inform others. The project will see us matching Carbon Co-op members who have retrofitted their homes in some way, with master's students at the University of Manchester. The students will visit homes, speak to members and document improvements made. If you'd like to take part in this programme, please complete the short form below.

Power in the City - From 9 to 5?

This episode is about the grind, the toil, the sweat, the slog, the graft, the duty - and things like skills and craft, commitment and creativity. Yes, it’s about work! The green kind. It’s about working in the energy transition. What exactly is a green job? How do I get myself one of those? What motivates folks who have one? And is it the same as a good job? Join us as we talk to people that hold green jobs and those that create the conditions for more of us to have one.

With interviews by Electricity North West, Andrew Hunt about the Oldham Green New Deal, our very own Mumin Rahman and our colleague Antonia Jennings at CLES talking about Community Wealth Building and a just transition.

Gaseous Domesticities Workshop

Join this co-production workshop based on Sam Johnson-Schlee's British Academy Innovation Fellowship research findings. The workshop will discuss how this research can inform new approaches to communicating with householders about energy adaptation and retrofit.

The workshop will introduce three data sets:

  • Archival research into the historic advertisement and comms regarding gas and heating

  • Machine Learning media analysis carried out by the research agency Space Doctors

  • Qualitative analysis of research with 13 householders

Through workshop exercises we will explore this data and identify implications and guidelines for how to communicate to householders about adaptation and retrofit.

The workshop will include light refreshments and lunch.
