Subject: ⚡ Shaping our future: AGM invites, local events & DIY shading

Welcome to the latest edition of the Carbon Co-op supporters' newsletter!

With last week’s sudden heatwave giving us a sharp reminder of how quickly our climate is shifting, the importance of resilient, adaptable homes has been front of mind for many of us. But whether we are tackling the challenges of summer overheating or pushing for impactful local energy policies, our greatest strength is what we can achieve together.

This month is a fantastic opportunity to get a closer look at how our democratic co-operative works. Inside, you will find an open invitation to attend our 2026 AGM as an observer - or, if you are ready to have a say in our future, the chance to officially join us as a member!

We are also sharing a fantastic, fully funded opportunity to upskill as an Energy Advisor, inviting you to catch up with us in person at the upcoming Fuelling Greater Manchester event at Greenstock, and diving into some brilliant DIY cooling hacks from our community forum to help us all beat the heat.

Join Us at the 2026 Carbon Co-op AGM (And Consider Becoming a Member!)

What a fantastic year it’s been for our community! Thanks to the dedication of supporters like you, we’ve made incredible strides in reducing domestic carbon emissions and pushing for impactful local energy policies.

On Wednesday, June 24th at 7:00 PM, we are holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) online. As a valued supporter, you are warmly invited to attend as an observer to hear our reports on the past year, review our accounts, and get a look at our plans for the year ahead.

Want to have a say in our future? The AGM is the democratic heart of our co-operative. If you’ve been considering taking the next step, now is the perfect time to officially join us! By becoming a Carbon Co-op member, you gain the right to vote on procedural business and even stand for election to our Board of Directors. We are particularly keen to see individuals from under-represented groups join our board to ensure our leadership reflects the rich diversity of the communities we serve.

(Note: We are also organising an in-person summer social later this year, so stay tuned for a chance to catch up face-to-face!)

🌳 Connect with the Community: Fuelling Greater Manchester Meets Greenstock!

Join us for a fantastic day out in Stockport! On Saturday 27th June, our Fuelling Greater Manchester networking event is heading to Greenstock, Stockport’s largest green community fun day, and we would love for you, your family, and friends to come along.

Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Woodbank Community Food Hub at Woodbank Park, this free, informal get-together is the perfect chance to connect with fellow community energy enthusiasts. Whether you are a seasoned retrofit professional, already involved in a local energy project, or simply curious to learn more, come along to swap ideas, share successes, and discuss the barriers we can tackle together.

Alongside our community energy conversations, you can enjoy free nature-based activities, music, and food. Plus, we'll be sharing exciting details about our upcoming free visit to the Stockport Hydro project on the 11th of July!

Fuelling GM is organised by Carbon Co-op and Greater Manchester Community Renewables, and supported by the Energy Learning Network.

💡 Step up for your community: fully funded energy advisor training

Are you passionate about tackling fuel poverty and helping your community navigate rising energy costs? Whether you are looking for a meaningful career change or want to formalise the advice you are already giving to friends and neighbours, the Greenworkx Energy Advisor Academy is an incredible opportunity to upskill.

Greenworkx is offering a fully funded, flexible online training programme designed to equip you with the knowledge to support households facing energy challenges. Over 4 to 8 weeks (approximately 50 hours of learning), you will dive into practical topics like utility bills, insulation methods, and accessing grants.

Graduates walk away with two nationally recognised qualifications—a City & Guilds Level 3 in Energy Awareness and a Level 2 in Fuel Debt Advice—alongside dedicated employment support to help you transition into the green workforce.

(Please note: While the training is fully funded, an £80 refundable deposit is required to secure your place).

Spaces fill up incredibly fast, and while they are currently between intake windows, you can ensure you are at the front of the queue for the next cohort by registering your interest today!

☀️ Beating the heat: how our community is tackling summer overheating

If last week's sweltering heatwave was a sharp reminder of how quickly our homes can warm up, you certainly aren't alone! Keeping our homes cool is becoming a top priority for many of us. Over on the Carbon Co-op Community Forum, a post sharing the Good Homes Alliance’s guidance on overheating has sparked a fantastic discussion full of DIY ingenuity and practical advice.

Our members have been sharing their hands-on solutions for shading south-facing windows to block out the sun. Highlights include a brilliant project by Tim, who built a narrow, freestanding pergola against his back wall to act as a brise soleil (sun shade). By keeping it detached, he cleverly avoided thermal bridging—and he even topped it with solar panels to generate an extra 860Wp of energy while keeping his kitchen cool!

Other members have been weighing in on the pros and cons of external bamboo blinds for dappled shade versus the ease of internal perfect-fit blinds paired with window foliage.

Whether you are looking for a quick interim fix or planning a permanent shading structure, this thread is a goldmine of peer-to-peer knowledge. Have a cooling hack that helped you survive last week's high temperatures? We’d love to hear it.
