Cackle Hatchery would like to remind you that your flock needs a little extra attention during the cold winter months. We have listed some tips below and we hope they are helpful for you. Ventilation – don’t block all the holes in the henhouse. The chickens need ventilation. Windows and ventilation should be on the south side. Block drafts from all other sides.
Water – chickens need continuous water if you expect them to lay eggs during the winter. Watch for frozen water; use heated waterers. See our website home page for a preset thermostat. Insulation – use thick litter for the floor but be sure to clean out frequently. Don’t let manure build up, get damp, and cause ammonia.
Lighting – consider supplemental lighting during the shorter daylight hours if you expect the chickens to lay eggs during the winter. Set a timer to turn the lights on at 4:30 a.m. and turn off at 10 a.m. Do not use extra light in the evening so the chickens will roost naturally.
Roost – do NOT use metal poles for roosts as they conduct the cold and the chickens could freeze their feet. A wood round pole or a plastic vinyl round pole is recommended.
Feed – be sure your chickens have plenty of feed. A healthy chicken is better able to keep itself warm. |
