AVOID COLD WATER PROBLEMS
Prevent damage to property from freezing temperatures. When plugged into a 120 VAC electrical outlet. Wrap-On’s model #188000 Thermocube, preset thermostat, will automatically turn the power on and off to any device plugged into ti.  Thermocube will turn power on when air temperature drops below approximately 35F and turn power off when the temperature exceeds approximately 45F. The Thermocube can be used with self regulating type heating cable and many electrical devices such as heat lamps, stock tank heaters and pond heaters.  Or, use the Thermocube as a freeze warning device by connecting it to a lamp that is visible to a neighbor.  The Thermocube will automatically turn on the light and signal your neighbor if your furnace fails and the temperature in your home drops below 35F. Maximum Capacity: 1800 Watts, 15 Amps, 120 VAC.  This device should be used in conjunction with a GFCI protected outlet.
Cackle Hatchery would like to remind you that your flock needs a little extra attention during the cold winter months. We have listed some tips below and we hope they are helpful for you.

  • Ventilation – don’t block all the holes in the hen house. The chickens need ventilation. Windows and ventilation should be on the south side. Block drafts from all other sides.
  • Water –  chickens need continuous water if you expect them to lay eggs during the winter. Watch for frozen water; use heated waterers. See our website home page for a preset thermostat.
  • Insulation – use thick litter for the floor but be sure to clean out frequently. Don’t let manure build up, get damp, and cause ammonia.
  • Lighting – consider supplemental lighting during the shorter daylight hours if you expect the chickens to lay eggs during the winter. Set a timer to turn the lights on at 4:30 a.m. and turn off at 10 a.m. Do not use extra light in the evening so the chickens will roost naturally.
  • Roost – do NOT use metal poles for roosts as they conduct the cold and the chickens could freeze their feet. A wood round pole or a plastic vinyl round pole is recommended.
  • Feed – be sure your chickens have plenty of feed. A healthy chicken is better able to keep itself warm.
