Subject: Wines to Help Ease You Out of January

When I got in my truck last night to head home the thermometer told me it was -15 degrees outside. It was at that point that I punched my dashboard thermometer. It was also at that point that I decided I was going to open a bottle from that someplace that isn’t currently a frozen wasteland. A land of kangaroos and Koalas. Sure, most everything else down there is trying to kill you, including killer wines. At this point I will risk it to get away from this arctic blast. I am, of course,

speaking of Australia.

Join me in hoisting a glass from that glorious land down under where January is Summer and pretend along with me that we are on the Gold Coast with our loved ones (or not if that suits you.) So with a bandaged hand I say, Cheers mate!

2021 Mother’s Milk Shiraz

750ml, $22.99

Wine Spectator: 92 Points

A wonderful, plushly fruited Barossa shiraz packed full of vibrant satsuma plum and juicy blueberry characters, underscored by hints of maraschino cherry, Asian spice, violets, turned earth, roasting meats and a nuance of softly spoken oak. This is a blend of three vineyards in the Barossa Valley and one in Eden Valley. Aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate and tar here with a touch of licorice and dark plum. The palate has a velvety texture with dark plum, blackberry and dark chocolate. Bold flavors here.

2018 Mother’s Ruin Cabernet

750ml, Reg: $23.99 SALE: $21.99

Wine Spectator: 92 Points.

Dense wild blackberry, maraschino cherry and huckleberry flavors are at the core, with toothsome tannins and a juicy thread. This restrained, well balanced expression of McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon is an ode to the ‘luncheon claret’, but it’s not as green and austere as that favorite lunchtime libation at the gentleman’s club. Early picked fruit from a vineyard with good breeding in the Willunga foothills results in an elegant, varietal style with classic First Drop drinkability.
