"No company, small or large, can win over the long run without energized employees who believe in the mission and understand how to achieve it"

Jack Welch

HE Space office teams meet at last!

After nearly 3 years of not seeing each other in person the office teams from Bremen, Noordwijk, Darmstadt, Toulouse and Harwell gathered in Westerstede on 12 May. The atmosphere was pretty excited.

A good Company culture is very important for HE Space. Our teams work well together via Teams but to see each other finally in the flesh was a real boost. With our growing team some colleagues had never met before and now they could enjoy some team challenges together. Producing a funny movie in a very short time was one of them ... and the winner was "Where is Waldo?"

Welcome to the ESA Living Planet Symposium

HE Space was proud to witness our new Climate Office team being presented officially at the ESA Living Planet Symposium on 23 May.

Eleanor O'Rourke, Team Manager, presented her colleagues to the wider community. If you were not able to attend, but are curious to know more, ESA has shared 18 videos here.

Cassini Hackathon challenges judged by HE Space

The space innovation business sector is thriving in Noordwijk, attracting many activities and players to the Space Campus where HE Space is a key partner. HE Space encourages colleagues to offer their expertise in support of students, young professionals and start-ups. Eduardo Araujo, based at ESTEC, used his experience to be a judge in the CASSINI Hackathon over the weekend of 14 May.

The theme of this 3rd CASSINI Hackathon was (Re)visit Europe. The teams had to use space data & signals to create ideas for a resilient and digitally oriented tourism industry. Challenge 1: Finding sustainable destinations, Challenge 2: Experiencing cities and culture and Challenge 3: Explore nature with care. The host, the Sunweb Group CEO, arranged a fitting and very attractive environment – holiday-style! Two teams participated in Rotterdam and one remotely. Overall speaking, it was a lot of fun.

The winner of the CASSINI Hackathon Netherlands is team jEarny! This team aims to create the 'Meetup of sustainable activities' in your local area or vacation destination - with space data! jEarny was offered an incubation period at SBIC and represented the Netherlands in the European final Demo Day on 19 May, pitching their idea to a multinational jury of investors and coaches.

Congratulations!

HE Space loves to celebrate long service anniversaries.

In February we celebrated that Raluca Popescu (in the picture) has been with the Company for 5 years. This month we congratulated Marta Horn with her 10 year anniversary and Guido Mittag with 5 years at HE Space. Thank you for all your support over the years!

Our Newcomers

We are happy to announce that the following colleagues have recently become members of the HE Space family. A warm welcome to:

Shimon Machluf has joined HE Space as a Mission Performance Engineer in Earth Observation at ESTEC. He moved to The Netherlands from Israel with his family in 2015 to do a post-doctorate at the University of Amsterdam in Physics in the field of experimental ultra-cold atoms. After a few years, he left the academic world and worked in a couple of startups, before settling in Airbus. There he worked on the instrument simulator of the Sentinel-5 satellite, focusing mainly on the stray-light correction algorithm.

Shimon has a strong background in research and development of novel and complex systems, including, models and experiments development, algorithms, and data analysis.

Outside working hours, Shimon loves photographing, cooking, and eating.

Barbara Ceretti has joined HE Space as a Communications Systems Engineer in TEC at ESTEC. She graduated as an Electronic Engineer graduated from University of Genoa. She worked for more than 20 years as cybersecurity and business continuity advisor for many clients especially in highly regulated sectors (banks and insurance, public administration, aerospace).

She has a long experience in security governance (risk management, implementation of security controls, audit) and she is familiar with many certification standards and frameworks.

In her free time, she likes sailing and horseback riding.

Marta Kowalska has joined the HE Space Finance team as Financial Administrator in the Noordwijk office. She is from Poland and holds a master’s degree in economics from Kraków University of Economics. In the Netherlands she worked at Booking.com as a Credit Controller.

She loves travelling, meeting people from different cultures, art, photography and nature.

She spent 6 months travelling in Southeast Asia, which was an amazing adventure.

Rashmita Jageswar has joined the HE Space Finance team in Noordwijk as an Assistant Financial Controller.

She is happy to join HE Space and the team of Lars. She has 10 years experience in Finance at an engineering consultancy, and she would like to contribute her experience to HE Space. Outside of work she spends most of the time with her family and friends. Being healthy is also important to her, so she is focused on healthy food and exercising.

Jonathan Crabb has joined HE Space as an Applications Engineer at ECSAT. After graduating in 2020 from the University of Strathclyde, Jonathan joins HE Space from Spirent in which he was working on developing the next generation of positioning and timing test solutions. Jonathan's doctoral thesis encompassed the development of miniaturized optical communications payloads, focusing on small satellites. In tandem with his doctoral studies, Jonathan was a space systems engineer for Gooch & Housego, working on developing the optical amplifier system for JAXA's LUCAS mission.

Besides his interest in space, Jonathan enjoys spending his time as a rugby referee in the winter and then on his bicycle when the sun comes out in the summer.

Federica Sala is delighted to join HE Space as Marketing and Communications Assistant in Noordwijk. Born in Italy but based in the Netherlands, Federica’s passion for languages and cross-cultural communication first pushed her to move abroad to study Chinese at the University of Edinburgh. Sponsored by local scholarships, she then went on to study a Chinese-taught master’s at Tianjin Nankai University and International Marketing (MSc) at the University of Leeds. She is now happily settled in the Netherlands with her Dutch boyfriend Robert and two cats.

Outside of work, Federica enjoys visiting friends, exploring new places, cycling to the beach, and trying out new recipes. She looks forward to learning all things spacey and meeting everyone at the Noordwijk office as well as the rest of the HE Space family.

Trees 4 HE Space - Have you claimed your tree yet?

As a gift for our companies 40th anniversary, every employee received their own fruit tree. Currently we have 118 keepers. Join us and claim your tree! It will be a surprise which tree you get. It could be a cocoa tree, mango, coffee or another fruit tree.

The trees we plant have big ambitions: to bring benefits not only to the environment, but also to the people who live in it. That's why we work with NGOs and local communities to select the right tree for the right place and the right purpose. That’s why we think about the medium and long term, because we’re not content with simply planting trees: we want to see them grow.

Computers for Jaffa Institute in Israel

HE Space Children's Foundation has supported the Jaffa Institute in Israel in the past. This time they asked for support to get computers and work stations for their Afterschool Educational Center in Jaffa Daled which they are renovating. The new Centre can host two regular groups and one special education group. The new facility is two floors with an elevator for the children who are physically handicapped. Here they can support 45 Ethiopian immigrant children.

We just received news that the computers have arrived. Eli Bental: "Since the children require these computers for immediate use, we decided not to wait until we move to our new Jaffa Daled Center, and set them up in the current space that is being used. In the fall, we hope to move to our new centre where the kids, and the computers, will find a welcome home."
