Breaking News Alert: One Dead, Golfer Bill Haas Injured in Chautauqua Multiple-Vehicle Collision
Professional golfer Bill Haas was injured and another man died in a four-vehicle accident at around 6:31 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, on Chautauqua Boulevard near the Almoloya intersection. LAPD said that Haas, 35, was the passenger in a speeding Ferrari driving toward Sunset when it collided with an SUV before hitting a light pole. A BMW and a fourth vehicle were also involved.
The Ferrari driver has been identified by the coroner’s office as Mark Gibello of Zillah, WA. His Huntington family had been hosting the player during the Genesis Open tournament. Gibello was pronounced dead on the scene.
The SUV flipped over and its driver, Haas and the unnamed female BMW driver were taken to the hospital. Actor Luke Wilson was in the fourth car that was “clipped” in the incident.
“I believe the cause was a high rate of speed. The individual lost control, colliding into several vehicles,” LAPD Officer Mike Lopez told the Palisadian-Post.
