Historic progress made at UNEA 5.2 to end plastic pollution

After a week of negotiations in Nairobi, Kenya, the mandate titled “End plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrument” was officially adopted on 2nd March at the closing of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2).

The work and dedication of #breakfreefromplastic movement members led to this moment and we have reason to celebrate. This resolution provides a solid foundation for an international and legally binding treaty to be developed which will consider the full life-cycle of plastics, ensuring that plastic pollution is now treated as more than just a marine pollution issue.

The work is far from over: the treaty itself will now move to the drafting stage for the next two years and #breakfreefromplastic will be following its progress closely to ensure the final treaty will truly stop plastic pollution.
