EPA Deregulation Will Make People Sick: BFFP US Members Respond

On March 12, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced more than 30 actions rolling back rules that were specifically designed to protect all of us from air and water pollution, exposure to harmful chemicals, and the damaging impacts of climate change.

“Richard Nixon established the EPA 55 years ago with bipartisan support, and now we see President Trump and Elon Musk attempting to unravel 55 years of environmental progress,” said Judith Enck, President of Beyond Plastics and former EPA Regional Administrator.

“We will fight for our right to clean air, clean water, and a government that values people over polluters,” added Cynthia P. Robertson, MSW, Executive Director of Micah 6:8 Mission in Southwest Louisiana.

Plastic Pellet Spill in the UK Following Collision of Two Ships in the North Sea

A cargo ship collision in the North Sea has spilled toxic plastic nurdles along 30 km of Norfolk’s coastline in the UK. These tiny pellets resemble fish eggs, putting seabirds and marine life at risk of choking or starvation. Conservationists have warned of severe ecological damage, yet shipping lobbies continue to evade responsibility.

With similar disasters in Sri Lanka (2021) and Galicia (2024), urgent action is needed. Members from #BreakFreeFromPlastic have called on the EU, UK, and the International Marine Organization to enforce strict cargo transparency rules, implement the polluter-pays principle, and curb plastic production to prevent future environmental crises. The burden on marine ecosystems continues to grow and stronger regulations are essential.

Exposing Nigeria’s Role in Waste Colonialism as EU Turns Africa Into a Dumping Ground

Civil society organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria have strongly condemned the federal government’s bid to import non-hazardous waste from the European Union (EU), warning that such a move could exacerbate the country’s waste management crisis. The protest comes after Nigeria and 23 other non-OECD countries applied to the European Commission (EC) for inclusion on the list of nations eligible to import waste from the EU ahead of the 21 February deadline for applications. In a joint statement, Nigerian environmental groups—including members of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) Nigeria, Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF), Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN), Zero Waste Ambassadors (ZeWA), and Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI)—denounced the government’s involvement in what they termed “waste colonialism.”
