Supporting Louisiana Environmental Justice Activists Impacted by Hurricane Ida

The #breakfreefromplastic movement sends our deepest condolences to our friends and colleagues in the Southern United States who have been displaced by Hurricane Ida, one of the most powerful storms of the last 160 years that made landfall across the Gulf South on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Many of the communities devastated by Hurricane Ida reside in the region known as "Cancer Alley", an 85-mile area with incredibly high rates of cancer due to the toxic air and water pollution from more than 150 oil refineries and petrochemical plants located there. These facilities harm and kill community members while increasing both the intensity and regularity of extreme weather events like Hurricane Ida.

Hurricane Ida serves as another painful reminder of the reality that the climate crisis is here, and the people who are suffering the first and worst damage are low-income families and communities of color. Please join us in supporting relief efforts underway to help those most impacted.

ECOTON Reveals Microplastics in Indonesia’s Air

#breakfreefromplastic member Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation (ECOTON), together with students of the Department of Chemistry at the State Islamic University, Maulana Malik Ibrahim, Malang, detected microplastic pollution in Indonesia's air last month. The contamination is suspected to come from illegal plastic waste dumping sites.

"Research at the location of plastic waste disposal in the Wonorejo mangrove area shows 110 microplastic particles captured by the air reservoir for 10 hours, which is a concentration three times more than the test of microplastic particles in the air around the PLTSa Benowo power station,” said Eka Chlara Budiarti, a Researcher with ECOTON.

Enforcing Extended Producer Responsibility in Europe

EARTH Thailand Calls on Government To Halt Plastic Waste Imports

Environmental groups in Thailand call for scrapping plans that would allow plastic waste importation for another five years. Earlier, the government-appointed sub-panel dealing with plastic waste decided to stop the import of plastic waste by 2020 as a way to tackle this systemic issue.

Now, more than 100 civil society organizations and 32,000 supporters have signed the online campaign led by #breakfreefromplastic member EARTH Thailand and the Saleng and Junk Shop Association.

Meet the Climate Activists Doing Brand Audits!

More than 99% of plastics are made from fossil fuels, which means that real climate action also requires addressing the plastic pollution crisis.

That’s why Laura and Mary Lou, two community leaders from the Climate Reality Project, recently came together to mobilize their community in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, U.S. to conduct brand audits together with Be the Solution to Pollution and the youth-led Sunrise Movement. Read more about their event and watch videos of inspiring youth activists in this new blog post.
