Support the Important Work of Waste Pickers Globally

Waste pickers, who manage community waste around the globe, are an essential part of solving the plastic pollution crisis. They are experts in their own right, and they bear the burden of picking up after the biggest plastic polluters, yet we hear and see little of their stories.

A new video by Peak Plastic Foundation and Only One, puts the spotlight on these inspiring communities so we can learn from, and support them.

On December 2nd, we will reveal 2020’s Top Corporate Plastic Polluters with the yearly Brand Audit launch! Together, with waste pickers around the world, let’s KEEP THE PRESSURE ON and demand accountability!

Now live! Surfrider’s Nurdles Report

Did you know around 230,000 tonnes of nurdles end up in our ocean every year? Nurdles are a raw material made from fossil fuels, used to manufacture plastic. During transportation, nurdles are often lost and spread quickly and widely, severely impacting the marine environment, water bodies, and nearby communities.

It’s time the European Commission set industry obligations, so that big oil and big plastic take full responsibility and real action.

#breakfreefromplastic member Surfrider Foundation Europe tackles the issue in their new report, which explores five case studies of nurdle pollution in Europe.

BFFP Asia Pacific members say NO to ‘deceptive’ recycling bill in Australia

As the Australian parliament continues its deliberation on the Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill, environmental groups in Asia Pacific have sounded the alarm on the proposed legislation. The bill paves the way to the establishment of a legal framework to transform Australia’s plastic waste to fuel, and send it to low-income countries to burn.

Satyarupa Shekhar, Break Free From Plastic Asia Pacific Coordinator, explains the industry-backed move: “For years we have asked people to stop littering, segregate waste, recycle…  while the plastic industry who manufactures these single-use plastics sit on their comfortable corporate offices probably thanking us for doing the work for them. It is high time we make them accountable, ask them to clean up their mess, or change their old ways, and offer genuine solutions.”

According to the report’s author, #breakfreefromplastic changemaker Christy Leavitt: “The only way to turn off the tap and protect our oceans is for companies to stop producing unnecessary single-use plastic — and that will require national, state and local governments to pass policies ensuring they do.”
