Tax Breaks for Exxon’s Proposed Plastics Plant in Texas, USA

The Calhoun County Independent School District board just approved a tax break agreement for Exxon to build a $10-billion plastic-producing complex in Lavaca Bay, Texas, USA, right next door to the Formosa Plastics Plant that #BreakFreeFromPlastic member, Diane Wilson, has famously been fighting to stop for decades. While this does not mean that the complex will get approved and constructed, it is the major first step in the process.

As reported in Inside Climate News: “Diane Wilson, a veteran environmental activist and retired fourth-generation shrimper in Calhoun County, said she believed the district had intentionally obscured its announcements of the special meeting on Tuesday in order to avoid public attention and turnout… Wilson, who previously won a $50 million settlement in her lawsuit against Formosa Plastics, said she plans to sue the district over the decision.”

INEOS’ Green Claims Challenged

While INEOS promotes its CO2 storage project, Greensand Future, as climate action, the company plans to expand oil extraction in the North Sea. Plastic Change warns that this will fuel an increase in plastic production, driving severe harm to the climate, environment, and biodiversity.
